Replaying the game I suddenly realized that something don't add together in the story. Watch the second dream (in the X-16) and read diary entry about it. First, we clearly can see a face of the same man who we'll see in the final movies later. Second, protagonist clearly states in the diary: "... I see a young, smiling guy on a threshold of a shed who holds a shining thing in his hands...". Sooo... how it could be a Marked One in the dreams? Wouldn't the protagonist recognize himself? :wot: He surely must have seen his face after incident and aware how he looks. If the 'young smiling guy' isn't protagonist, it means the man in the final movies also isn't him? I'm confused

The subtle hinting of Marked One's identity as Strelok in the game has been surely tailored with hot needle without much accent on logic... Even after the end I wasn't fully convinced it's him.
But hey, the flashback dreams are cool.

I was sure that Marked One was Strelok, but now after that diary entry I don't know....

Let's call it a "false lead"... As the scientist's hologram at the end says "You were ordered to kill yourself" and that explains a lot.

They just didn't want you to know straight away that your character is Strelok that early in the game. Therefore you can keep on playing thinking that eventually you'll end up finding Strelok so that you can accomplish the mission of killing him.
Like BR796164 says, the scientist's speeech at the end leaves no doubt about who you are.

haha even though this post had MAJOR SPOILERS on it I still read it. Fuck I had no clue that Strelok=you, and I am up to the Yantar first time run through.

The first time I realized it was when you go to talk to the doctor in the hideout and see the boobytrap cutscene, but I wasnt 100% sure at that point.

Yeah, after Doctor cinematics it becomes obvious, I just forgot what he said.
Hmmm, now I got it. I think that dream cinematics aren't what Marked One sees while dreaming.
They represent reality. So, Marked One dreamed some abstract 'young smiling guy' while in reality it was him.

Yes, the Doctor cinematics pretty much says it all, since he addresses you directly by the name 'Strelok'. By then, and from the clues you gathered, you should already know who you are. What remains is to find out the rest of Strelok's story, what did he do with his 'group' (Doctor, Fang and Ghost), and how did he end up in the Death Truck.

Hopefully his story will be explained further in Clear Sky.
