I mainly got those ideas while i remember playing Thief Deadly Shadows game. Now this could have been an accident of a glitch type of execution, but unintentional or not its still an amazing idea.
In Thief 3
- You use blackjack, but you have to allign yourself otherwise its gonna fail to knock the guy out and he will alert the guards. (Though obviously if there is another guard 1 meter away, then he is gonna notice you which realistically makes sense)
- If you use stealth dagger it succeeds but the guy is gonna let out a yell which will alert a guard if he is 8 meters away or something.
So here is the idea for Thief 5
- In First Person View, have it so you have to hit with a blackjack with such a force or blow to a certain area to the head, and if you miss the guy will be dazzled for 1 second and alert the guards if you failed to deliver it correctly. And if hit correctly the guards 5 meter away or something wont hear it.
- With the stealth dagger the guy will let out a yell. So if a guy is lets say 10 meters away then he can hear it and come check it out. But stealth dagger always hits atleast.
- Also i want to do one thing that i think Thief 2 or 3 kinda was flawed on. A blackjack should never work if a person is aware or suspicious. Because the brain itself doesnt seem to be easily knocked out when you are tense or on guard, so that in Thief 2 would never probably work in real life if a guard is trying to find you slowly. And also criticism in Thief 3 is you cant knock out guard when they are sitting in a chair (Which is legit stupid, maybe they didnt think about it). But just animate the head tilting down when he gets unconcious, i doubt that would have been hard to animate. But most likely it went unoticed. But when you are sitting, i take it you are probably what you can say "Not on guard" so knocking someone out when sitting should count.

- allow player to peek through door and knock out the NPCs by throwing things at the back of their head
- is grappling hook a good idea for the next thief game?
- add shapeshifter apparition and floating apparition into Thief 5
- More mission that take up the theme of citywatch power tripping, witchhunt, growing gang problem , looting amid resource crisis, beggar's revenge, wartime act of sabotage,etc
- keeper-inspired intelligence agency that do not rely on glyph and magic
- proper lantern like bullseye or railroad lantern instead of flare
- make glowing mushrooms frobable and make use of it as alternative option for illumination
- i think we need to throw in newfangled faction. i think of the rise of nonbeliever and freethinker group that is skeptical and vocal to voice their dissent against faith and supertitious in thief universe and put hammerite into a corner (but i feel bad for hammerite because they had had negative past events like events of old quarter and mechanist uprising before they successfuly regained their hlory in thief 3. It's unclear as to what happened to hammerite in thief 4)

After Eidos made Deus Ex Human revolution, everybody thought they would create similar gameplay for Thief 4 with knockdown animations.

I wouldn't make this so random. Thief should always knockout guards, Blackjack mechanics doesn't need resemble to real life.
I would create something new. If guard wears a helmet, thief could use a poppy tincture which would put on guards face and make him unconscious.

I would make thief can't kill with the dagger at all. Only in some occasions when the narrative needs, thief could make small wound on someones skin to take the blood for purposes of the ritual (Jacknall's Paw, Deadly shadows).

I would make thief can't kill with the dagger at all. Only in some occasions when the narrative needs, thief could make small wound on someones skin to take the blood for purposes of the ritual (Jacknall's Paw, Deadly shadows).
How about killing NPC with poisonous dart instead of dagger ?
Chloroform knockout would be a good idea for helmet guard imo , but it's thief game not a splinter cell knock off after all. If the idea isn't freasible than just use good old gas arrow
I am coming up with more ideas recerntly
- Tree beasts can wrap their roots around your body (but don't ditch the old tree beasts completely)
- Puffball mushroom. You know what mushroom spore can do to your health if you inhale large quantity of it
- Venomous animal that could immobilize you in one bite. Stay alert with this sort of animal when you are venturing in the forest

What is gas arrow exactly ?
It's probably water mixed with some areosol ingredient which is gaseous when combined with air, that is when arrow hits the target.
Puffball mushroom would be nice addition to the gameplay to knockout the guards with shields.
