Ick. New top-level 'forum category' page. - by Shadowcat

Why why why why why?????
Who is so incapable of glancing through the full list that they needed this irritation of a front-end? The different categories already had titles; it wasn't as if they were hard to figure out...
All this does is make it harder and really annoying to get to all the forums. Please put it back the way it was. This is silly.

Agree. Looks more primitive and sorta odd. Oh, and get the rest of the ttlg websites back up please! They're down from over here.

I was guessing they did it to help with their bandwidth issues. There's no way they'd inflict this on us under the guise of an improvement or "feature." I now can't tell at a glance whether there's a new developer update. I can't tell whether there's anything new in the Morrowind forum. I actually have to go into those forums, take a quick look, then come back out. It's not so bad for the busy forums which I visit anyway, but not so good for the sparser ones that don' see many posts.
I'm sorely tempted to make a special web page for myself that lists all the forums I'm interested in within their own layer and go there each day. But I don't want to do that if this really is related to their efforts to reduce bandwidth. *That* I understand.

It's total ick, I agree. Makes my job a whole lot harder, I'll tell you. Patrolling the boards is really tough this way.
But.
Look at it this way...
The forum summary page that we had before was about 94k, and updated constantly. It gets more hits than any of the sub-pages on a regular basis. And that weighs in at around 1M for every 10 people hitting it. At probably 500-1000 summary page hits per day, that's between 500M and 1G transfer.
Rest assured, we all hate it. The change may not need to be permanent (quoth MsLedd) if we are able to trim the fat off other things, but for now Every Little Bit Helps.
It's just a heaving drag for now.
If I could think of a way to make a better thing that weighed less than 94k (significantly less, like 9k), I'd do it in a heartbeat, you know I would.

Okay, that's understandable then.
Seemingly arguing against myself now (but purely because I don't think I've ever used the feature in all the years I've been reading TTLG) you could save yourself ~4K on almost every single hit to the forums by removing the drop-list forum access form at the bottom of the page. Or you could reduce that to a category-access form, too, and save ~3K.
Perhaps you could add some tracking to that form to see how much it gets used, and if most people are like me and don't ever use it then you could do away with it. That could make a worthwhile little dent in the bandwidth problem.
Likewise, any other streamlining of the standard headers and footers should also have a noticeable effect, when multiplied that many times over.

I cant see what you are complaining about, and I really mean I can't see.
I cant find <a href="http://www.ttlg.com" target="_blank">www.ttlg.com</a> or <a href="http://www.thief-thecircle.com" target="_blank">www.thief-thecircle.com</a> I've been blocked.
but I can find the forums if I put in the cgi bit.
Vaul on 14/11/2001 at 03:52
I'm having the same problem as Belboz.. can't get to <a href="http://www.ttlg.com" target="_blank">www.ttlg.com</a> or <a href="http://www.thief-thecircle.com" target="_blank">www.thief-thecircle.com</a> at all, but if I go through the cgi on ttlg I can pull up the forums. (nothing under the Circle at all)
GingerbreadMan<br />You must have a ton of scripting in that main forum page if it's 96k. Can all that really be necessary? Am I the only one on these boards that just checks the one forum I use most often on a regular basis (Thief Editing <img src="wink.gif" border="0"> ), and then checks the others every now and again? Probably so.. but anyway, if the constant updating of that page is causing so much bandwidth usage, then I can't see how you guys have any choice but to cut out the 'new posts' notification for all the forums or get some more efficient scripting <img src="smile.gif" border="0">
We may not like not being able to have all the updates listed in one place, but I'd much rather have to go into each forum I use to see if there are updates than not have the forums at all <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">
Anyway, that's my hay-pennies worth.<br />Cheers,<br />Vaul

You could also save lots of bandwidth by getting rid of the font tags and using more CSS styles for those and bold/italics etc instead. (This page drops about 3K when you strip out the font tags, for instance.)
Of course, it's possible that the instances of font tags are needed to support some of the older, stupider browsers, but it's worth a shot.
