I wish to preform an experiment. - by Minion21g

Ok. Many of us have heard of changing the lighting specs in the configuration file from Linear to Quadradic to get a better framerate, and a better playing experience right?
If not, do a search here on the forums for "Quadratic"
Moving along though, I want to test if it truly does increase framerate, and preform a controlled Experiment. I will list the instructions and will have everything needed here in the post.
I need 5 people with Different Ranging computers as a Control, acting as the norm and Using the original configuration file.
I need 5 more people that also have different computers to play as the Variable. Using a customed configuration file.
I will have a backup of the original configuration file. I also recommend creating a new character for this.
I will provide more information once there is enough interest. Please help me out :)

I don't see how quadratic lighting would improve performance, as it involves more complex math (afaik, tell me if I'm wrong). Linear falloff means that the light level decays at the same rate. Quadratic lighting means that instead of a straight line, the falloff is a curve. One uses subtraction, the other uses exponents. Something like that.
I have no idea why linear is the default--it looks like crap, and I can't tell a difference in performance either way.

Well that's what I would like to prove, which if any shows some preformance increase. I think it really depends on the computer also. I know for fact that my 550 mhz machine gets a signifigant increase of fps while running Quadradically instead of Linear.
Your also right about the Complex Math, least I believe so. I know from previous posts that people noticed an increase in loadtimes, probably the lighting being drawn.
I'm just trying to play Scientist for a day and prove to the community which is better.

Remember that the test persons should use the same add-ons and plug-ins as that can affect the performance too!

I still need 10 ppl :(

well..okay...
if you really want to do this, then there should be something like a...benchmark...
ONE config, only ONE region to go around( like...Vivec, Foreign Quarter), everything should be the same...EVERYTHING, except for the computers...
well..I myself...I´ve got Fraps to test my fps..., but mind the fact, that I´ve only got Morrowind, no AddOn...If this isn´t important, I´ll do it...
My sys:
P4 2533
256 MB RDRAM( RIMM4200, on monday I´ll get another 256 MB)
GeForce 4 Ti 4200 ( Detonator 43.45, HEY! that´s important, too!)
Asus P4T533 with Onboard Sound( CMI-8738MX)
Maxtor 6YO80LO( ATA100, 7200rpm)
well..I guess, we should all use the latest patch of Morrowind( dunno what exact version), nVIDIA-Users should use only the same Detonator, and IF the Deto-versions are different, then the PC ought to be the same! ATi-users..wellwhat´s the latest catalyst-driver?
All settings in the driver menue: no AA, no AF, MipMap Level...( well, I only know the nVIDIA menu) Best Image Quality..oh yes...in the BIOS the AGP Aperture Size should be...well..say 8 MB RAM( as I´ve heard, that reducing the Aperture size to a level as low as 8 MB results in better performance, too)...and then...
Well..Drawing Distance...dunno...far, or near, or the middle?
all of these things are important, minion21g! Tell us now, what Driver the guinea- pig should use, tell us EVERYTHING!!!
