Your cars in the USA I think cost a lot less than here. Used and new.
Must be with tax etc.
Just curious. We have to have a car test MOT every Year do you?.
To see if it is road worthy.
Our fuel here now Is over a £1.00 Litre over $2.US. What is yours?.
MOT: Varies by each state. California had mandatory vehicle inspections but the law was struck down for one reason or another. Bi-yearly smog emissions tests are the only mandatory requirement. commercial pickup trucks with flatbeds/utility bodies/gross vehicle weight and tractor-trailers are inspected at highway patrol commercial weigh stations.
Tax: California yearly registration fee's are very expensive and the state legislature wants to raise them again but Arnold:erg: is fighting the bill.
Petrol: 3.785 liters to the gallon - gallon of [regular] low octane gas is about $3.50 where I live.
Price: Beater cars can be quite cheap - old pickup trucks are easiest to find and can be inexpensive to rebuild if one scavenges scrap/junk yards.. just need tools and a Chiltons [vehicle specific repair manual] book :p

Very expensive? Registering my car cost ~$80, and renewals are less than that. Pretty damn cheap given all the stuff that the DMV does to improve everyone's driving experience.
Do they vary by car or something?
Trappin on 10/1/2008 at 08:24
The registration fee is based on the purchase price of the vehicle... on second thought I think its more complicated than that :p I have no idea how the renewal cost is calculated.

Average cost of a new car in San Jose is 30K(? guessing). Plug that into the calc tool and see what happens.. then do the same thing but try the Washington or Texas DMV. I'll wager those two states are half the cost of California.

Who are you and what have you done with agwpt.
Surely you are not taking any stance other than that the DMV, as a government entity which by its very definition can't do anything well, should be privatized because of its inefficient bureaucracy? ;)

Fuel costs are horrendous here for a start around $10 US,a gallon (£5.)
I use Diesel in the end cheaper, my car does loads of miles to the Gallon which is okay for me.
Car tax is around $225.00 a Year according to size of the engine
Cars registered on or after 1 March 2001 (based on fuel type and CO2 emissions) is cheaper.
Mot is compulsory and you can not get the car Tax or insured without it/
Quite strict as well. What they test.

I think in the end to buy a car is cheaper In the US and Europe than here.

With all the problems that car has, he'd have to pay ME $500 to take it off his hands.
