94 Pontiac? Lots of computer controls to go bad on these GM engines. I'd walk away from the deal.
For the same amount of money, you could buy a Japanese car in better shape. I bought a Nissan/Datsun 310 for $700 bucks, and it ran forever. I actually preferred driving it to the newer VW I had.
See if you can save another $500 for a total of $1000, and try buying a nicer Honda or Nissan, or something. These Japanese cars go for 150,000 miles without even blinking, and most of them last til about 300,000 miles if you take care of them. I've got a 91 Nissan Sentra I bought for $1100, and it has air conditioning, automatic, and runs good. I put over 20,000 miles per year on my vehicle driving to work alone, so this is why I bought such a cheap car. The car has more than paid for itself in gas savings, insurance, reliability, and I also got hit once. The lady's insurance paid me more than I paid for the car. This just doesn't get any better for me. I banged out the dent with a 3 lb sledge hammer, and I still drive it.

Depending on your age and driving record insurance will cost $350-600 a year as well. I love and hate cars.. but mostly hate them :p

Car-less? You're insane, man!
Oh, 18 without any accidents or tickets (moving or otherwise) on my record. Completely clean record. And good grades to boot!
If I were to look for something else, where should I start? Classifieds have nothing under $5,000.

Where are you located? (Which state and/or major metropolis?)
RyushiBlade on 9/1/2008 at 10:48
Missouri, about 45 minutes from Saint Louis. But I'm not in a hurry to find anything. I don't need a car for a few months, so I can keep checking the classifieds. The St. Louis Post Dispatch actually has a few just outside my price range.

Your cars in the USA I think cost a lot less than here. Used and new.
Must be with tax etc.
Just curious. We have to have a car test MOT every Year do you?.
To see if it is road worthy.
Our fuel here now Is over a £1.00 Litre over $2.US. What is yours?.

I told him I'd just attach a pan to the underside and pour the oil back in. He said that was 'an awesome idea, man!'
PLEASE,NEVER do anything like this!
If it comes loose at highway speeds it could smash the windshield of the car behind you causing an accident and possibly kill people.
Unless you have an automotive engineering degree and know what you are doing never add unintended parts to vehicles.
Most states have a yearly vehicle safety inspection program that look for such modifications and make the owner remove them because they are a safety hazard.
I would never do anything like this due to the possibility of killing someone or being sued for damage or injuries.
I would avoid the car because its near the end of its life.
This type of car is for someone who doesn't mind a fixer-upper and can do the work themselves.
Check Craigslist for your area for some deals on vehicles.Be sure to have your dad look over the car because he is knowledgeable.Good luck.

Given the information in this thread, I sure wouldn't buy this car. :erg:
