Pretty sure the number was there before the date... I think it has more to do with that's the time after school when you'd meet to light up. I wouldn't say you're an idiot if you don't know it, just then you don't get all the 420 jokes out there. It's like not knowing what 1337 is. Please tell me you at least know what 1337 is.
DT is reaching for the connection to Forever420 IMO though... He might be on safer ground with a connection to the track records of members that ever had a list of numbers after their nick... It seems at least anecdotally there's a trend there. But personally I always let a person stand by their own faults & never venture to attribute the sins of the fathers to the sons.
My advice, Rob, is what people have already said. Don't let yourself get baited, stay cool, and counter-zing as appropriate.
