I was expelled from the Temple twice and can not pay aments anymore. Is it vital for the rest of the game?

Nah, it's not vital; it's a nice thing, as you can hit all the local shrines for 0 gp before you head out (especially nice at Ghostgate, when going into the Red Mountain area), but it's not vital.
