As far as commercials go, I think that some companies feel pressured to come up with something original, be it to express their individuality or to sell a product, and are instead conjuring up off-the-wall randomness. Then again, such seems to work on the intended audience. I would think that people who actively participate in online communities are still a minority, so the lag between the Internet and conventional media outlets seems to make sense. Most people I know are Internet-savvy enough to know how to download porn and music and create basic myspace profiles, but the concept of an online discussion board seems to be lost on them. We may take the near-instantaneous exchange of information for granted, but as far as I can tell, the same can't be said about everyone.

The worst part is that the SA forums are actually quite shit. The people there are so fucking stupid, it's unreal. But then I'm just angry because nobody posted in my excellent thread because the only people that visit NMD are fuckchested metal fans.

Thous two never crossed. Hacker is hacker and 1337 is just something stupid that pretends to be something cool.
However, urban legend says that real hackers were replacing alphabetal characters with numbers, in order to prevent their online conversation being evaluated as suspicious by surveillance word filters.
If it's true, it must have been in stone age of surveillance programs and computer hacking.

I was more refering to how it seemed that hacker when down in use when leet went up. It just seems odd that a way to quickly type was replaced by one that took longer than normal.

Nobody actually talks in 'leet'. I imagine hackers and retards (read: Megatokyo fans) alter the odd word, though. Like j00. But goddamn, if I ever saw anyone write that, I'd fucking rape them.

Net slang is in the doldrums at the moment. I love language, and I love the way you can fuck about with it, but many of the current memes are well past their best-before date. This is evidenced by the way that people are still using them, but put them in in caps to show that they're aware of this AM I RITE CONFIRM/DENY. C'mon people, we need some new stuff.

Well, since Google says no-one else has, I'd like to coin the <s>phrase</s> term 'neololgism'. Hopefully its meaning is fairly clear.
Mind you, even that refers to a boat that's already sailed.

I guess all my friends were just really messed up then. Makes a good deal of sense now that I think about them.
