But, the problem becomes, in my mind, that this life no longer really matters to the overly pious. One gives themselves over so deeply to paying the premiums for afterlife insurance that they forget to make the most out of this life, and forget that being a part of humanity means doing things to make humanity better for human's sake--not for God's sake. Religion can easily become a path of self-indulgence and self-importance, though it shouldn't be.
Agreed. And in my interpretation, the Bibilical lesson isn't that you should singlemindedly focus on getting to heaven yourself, but follow the Christ model of ministering to and loving others.
There is a philosophy that I wish more Christians would follow, credit goes to Mother Angelica: Don't worry about getting into heaven, just do what is right in the present moment.

Sounds like you are feeling a bit of guilt there fett, no reason to feel guilty at all. You are finding maybe a bit of balance in your life. You do what you want to do, not because someone else wants you to. I say my prayers, I do it for me, because it works for me.

True, CCCToad. People used to ask my Dad if he was a committed Christian but never seemed satisfied by his reply that he lived by Christian principles.
Nowadays he basically tells them to get stuffed.

While I'm at it, I'll go ahead and list another doctrine annoyance I have: "Accept Jesus as your personal savior and be guaranteed to go to Heaven". Aside from the fact that scripture directly contradicts this (read the passage where Jesus is talking about the judgement), it leads to a dangerous mentality. First, as long as you are able to get people to verbally say "I accept Jesus as my savior", you are doing your job and saving souls. Second, hypocrisy is OK. After all, it doesn't matter what you do in your own life because you are SURE of going to heaven!

And prayer doesn't have to be limited to a Christian context.
Apart from intercessionary prayer is there much difference between prayer and meditation?

One little near death experience and you go running back to your imaginary friend? I had such high hopes for you, but you disgust me fett.
That statement disgusts me. And imaginary friends are in fact the most reliable.
