I accidentally killed a chicken in Riverwood once and everyone started attacking me.
And continuing on the theme of accidental murder, I was apparently finished clearing up some Bandits in Helgen and was informed that I couldn't fast travel due to nearby enemies. So, I walked back towards the North gate and noticed a figure apparently trying to leave town. Seconds later a sneak attack ended this operation, but it turned out to be the Elf in Riverwood who fancied Camilla Valerius...

Speaking of Camilla's brother. On the Xbox version I stole the golden claw, took it to a fence, sold it, bought it back (as not stolen), but when I dropped the 'non-stolen' golden claw, it suddenly turned RED again. Grrrr... Nothing like a broken fence... :(

AFAIK this happens to most quest items.

I also noticed that if you get your follower to pick up something after they are overloaded, it somehow gets tagged as 'Stolen' from time to time. Its a way to by-pass the amount the NPC can carry, but it runs a risk...
