Been there. The first year I took my girlfriend camping, I was shaken awake around 3:30 in the morning because she was frantic and terrified and there's goddamned
bears out there tearing through our stuff and jesus christ get me out of here NOW!
Raccoons.
Holy shit. Didn't you take a gun with you just in case? That's a good idea when camping in areas that have aggressive animals lurking around.

My ever so deserving of me girlfreind and I went hiking over the weekend and we climbed to the top of a popular mountain called the "M" (popular to our area... not the world), so we got to the very top of the mountain in an hours time of hiking when we decided that rathar than going back down the way we came, we're gonna go down the backside of the mountain. So we start hiking down... down... and about an hour later of hiking we notice that we're still REALLY high up and the trails aren't very steep. And of course we hear the sound of god trying to kill us (thunder), so my girlfreind starts FREAKING OUT!!! "Shit we're gonna get struck, we're gonna get struck!" So i'm like "no we're not, we're safe as long as we stay out of the open and near lots of trees" so like 2 minutes later i'm lookin back at her telling her to hurry up and BOOM!! there was a lightning strike right near the top of the mountain that we're on and it wasn't like lightning and then thunder a few seconds later... it was more like FUCK LIGHTNING THUNDER RUN! So my girlfreind pretty much goes into shock and starts screaming and refuses to keep going! she just stopped there in the rain and i'm like "Don't be stupid, be smart! If we don't get lower we have a better chance of getting hurt by a strike if it did happen to strike near us." So she finally started to run with me and it literally took 2 more hours to get off the mountain! So a 1 hr hike up, and 3 hrs down... how does that work?
So if you're gonna go hiking, check the weather first... and if you happen to get caught in the storm, don't be stupid... it's just a discharge of electro-motive force jumping a spark from the ground to the excess positively charged ions in the sky (i think... still a little shady on the process)... Nothing to be afraid of... Just a little shock. and some rain.

The moment that lightning struck close to you, you better would have just cowered, preferably in some dell in the ground, legs close together and then wait for the storm to pass by, instead of running around looking for trees.
On the other hand that's easy to say now, and the chance for you to get fried was low anyway.

i wasn't afraid of getting struck, i was more afraid of something near me getting struck and shooting particles of wood or something into my skin

You were more afraid of getting hit by harmless particles than a lightning?

yes concidering the chances of me getting directly struck whilst standing near multiple tall trees was much lower than the tree getting struck and falling on my head as well as blowing out my hearing and injecting tree into my neck and spine
