I preferred the old map system... - by twisty

In almost every way that I can think of, Oblivion has superceded Morrowind. However, something that I prefered about it's most recent predecessor was the mapping system that it had; the old system was indicative of any terrain traversed whereas the new system displays no such indication, albeit one stipulated by waypoint.

I REALLY, REALLY miss the mini-map in the lower right corner. God, I hope someone mods one.

I can't understand why they took out the fog of war feature from Morrowind (which is still there in the mostly worthless local map). It wasn't for balance, I can't imagine it would detract from the XBox experience ... I don't get it. It was such a great feature for when you'd have those moments of not knowing what to do. When it happened in Morrowind I'd just whip out the map and go someplace I'd never been before.
I know the XBox is somehow responsible, I just know it. Can't figure out how yet though.

I'll just say I disagree. I don't want to type up a solid block of a rant about how much I hated Morrowind's map.

An easy indicator of where I've actually been vs. where I haven't would be nice, but fog of war invisibility wouldn't please me.

I downloaded the color map for the PC version. I think it would have been nice to do something like Morrowind - colorizing the portions of the map that you have travelled.
When it comes to a minimap, I'm glad it wasn't included. I never used the minimap in Morrowind, and I think it would just anger the fanboys (OMG THAT MINIMAP IS SO HUGE WTF COMPASS x2!).

I imagine whatever it is would be worthless dialogue in comparison to the points that are raised against Oblivion's decision with maps.
They should have implemented the larger map the same way as Morrowind.
1. Fog Of War
2. Player Notes.
With this, things would be better.

Yeah, I don't get me not being able to put notes. People complained about it in Morrowind, so they put it in the expansions and patted themselves on the back about it...and then they took it away again? What the heck? Why? I want to mark the location of all the various things I come across that don't get waypointed.
RyushiBlade on 16/4/2006 at 05:34
I want to be able to add notes to places that are already marked (I thought they did a good job at marking all the good stuff in Oblivion). But I want to be able to select something like The Dark Fissure and write 'Necromancer Hideout' so I know what enemies are inside.

I hated the world map in Morrowind. You have this beautiful, detailed paper map that has roads, cities, shrines, shipwrecks, you name it...then in the game you have this bland pixelated mess that doesn't show anything. I do wish the Oblivion map colored in as you travelled but at least it resembles the map that everyone who bought the game already has.
