I played System Shock for the first time a few days ago, but I just beat SS2 again - by DentonSHODAN

I thought I figured out everything about the game, but nope, that's not the case.
Believing that you've figured out everything is almost always a sure sign that you have not. In fact, pretty much the inverse.

Glad to help.

What waste of nanites? Hacking those turrets down in Engineering is invaluable, for instance. It buys you a whole lot of peace of mind. I love hearing them mowing down hybrids and protocol droids. The same goes for those two turrets in Hydro. The turrets in Ops are also quite useful when on your side. Even the missile turret in Command is useful, because it will kill the Psi Reaver for you. Nanites are plentiful in the game: I hack everything in sight, and usually reach the last Replicator, in the BOTM, with over 6000 nanites.
If for you a turret is only
maybe killing a pipe hybrid before blowing up, then you're probably doing it wrong :p
Okay then Mr. Fancypants, what's the RIGHT way to hack a turret? :)
I've stood around watching turrets ineptly miss a point blank pipe hybrid, or lose against a couple of shotgun hybrids or in later levels, to a single pyro monkey. Since you can't repair the suckers, they're doomed to die and they rarely give a good account of themselves before they go.
Granted, hacking turrets is fun and amusing, but so is blowing nanites on AR ammo so I can run around killing worms on full-auto.

It takes more than a few shots to take down a bot, especially the Assault and Security ones. Besides, if you meleé them, they can't shoot you (as long as they're not backed up against a wall or other obstruction)
It only takes a few shots with an overcharged laser pistol to take out a maintenance bot. By the time you reach higher level bots, you have access to multiple EMP rifles which utterly obsoletes the laser pistol. While taking out bots via melee is not difficult, you still risk getting zapped. Also waiting at corners for them to waddle over is a drag.

Turrets hardly ever drop anything useful, though. I've only ever found batteries, standard bullets, and maybe the occasional maintenance tool on them, and that's if they have anything at all. They don't even give you health modules (or whatever they are) when you have that robotic health OS upgrade installed.
Turrets drop ammo about half the time which is always welcome in my book. On the other hand, hacking them just distracts a hybrid or two before they get blown the hell up. This doesn't seem to get any better on higher difficulties, quite the opposite.

Because I've never had them die with just one shot from a laser pistol. Maybe they do with the LP on overload like General Four said, but I've never tried it. I always have shotgun shells coming out the wazoo anyway, since I hardly ever use the shotgun for anything else.
Laser Pistol should almost never be used on standard setting. Always use it on overcharge unless your enemy has like 1 hp left and you're worried about energy. Standard shot is useless except for irritating enemies or killing cameras. As for shotgun shells, I like to keep them for busting eggs.

So yeah, when did you notice the similarities between the two aforementioned levels?
Since I had played SS1 many times before SS2 came out I immediately picked up on that and it was a great moment. I am wondering however what did all you guys who had
not played SS1 first think of that section when you encountered it? It must have been odd since the level geometry was much simpler so did you figure out it was reference to the first game or just put it down to the cyberspace feel?

Plus overcharged shots degrade the gun just as much as standard ones (as far as I know at least) so you can kill/damage a lot more bad guys before needing to maintain or repair the weapon.

On my first playthrough I believe my exact words were, "...what? WHAT!? OH HELL YEAH!" That feeling fizzled out when I discovered it was just a fragment of the original level.
I would've loved it if the devs had made the last level a sort of "level medley" -- a blending of all the levels of the original Shock into a brilliant final chapter, rushing through SHODAN's recollection of her first taste of real power.

The next version of ADaOB will 'fix' that by reducing the degradation rate for normal shots.

I thought it was just the overall vibe the developers were going with for cyberspace. I noticed the different textures and level geometry, but I thought it was cool nonetheless.

I remembered it from the demo of SS1 I had played many years before.

Well, the risk of being zapped is present no matter how you do it.
I usually don't wait for them unless I'm in a tight corridor (like the ones on Hydro). I just rush them. Of course, I also tend to have my Agility pumped up sooner, since I'm working towards the Laser Rapier. :)

Maybe, but it's always Standard bullets, which are abundant anyway. And hacking them does prove quite useful, especially
on the Bridge with Korenchkin and right outside the VB's Shuttle Bays where the hybrids ambush you. I've never had them come for me; they always go right for the turret, and the turret always wins.Quote Posted by Mercurius

I'll try it the next time I play, because I seldom use it on overcharge.

Eh, that seems to decadent for me. I usually just take them out with the pistol.

I've had that thought in my mind for a while, now. Maybe if CCP is ever finished, it could happen. :ebil:

I thought it looked odd, but beyond that I didn't really think much of it at the time.
