I played System Shock for the first time a few days ago, but I just beat SS2 again - by DentonSHODAN

The laser pistol is a godsend early on - energy 1 and repair 1 is a pretty cheap investment for a weapon which solves all of your turret and bot problems.
Are you sure about that?
I only ended up getting the energy pistol in Hydroponics, but even then it took quite a number of shots to destroy turrets and those big security robots.
I noticed that energy weapons have two different settings: Norm, I think, and Over. Anyone know what the difference between the two is?

Why on earth carry three Laser Pistols when you can have one Laser Rapier which can smack the crap out of the bots and then take them down with a single pistol bullet?
Because shooting a bot a few times with a laser pistol is easier, safer and faster. Now three at once is a bit decadent but it is an option.

As for turrets, I just hack them and let them do dirty work for me.
A waste of nanites. I suppose 'dirty work' is killing
maybe one wrench hybrid before exploding ingloriously? Better to blow them up and loot them.

The shotgun takes Protocol Droids down in three shots, and ammo is abundant due to all the shotgun hybrids running around.
Why on earth waste three shotgun slugs when you can just shoot them once with a laser pistol?

Oh wow. Gosh did it ever occur to you to try the alternate firing mode?

You can easily lay waste to everything electric, and don't need to worry about wasting bullets on protocol droids.
Why shoot them at all, when you can just trick them into blowing themselves up? ;)

Three? I'd say carry five or six!
That gives you basically unlimited laser pistol shots for the rest of the game.

What waste of nanites? Hacking those turrets down in Engineering is invaluable, for instance. It buys you a whole lot of peace of mind. I love hearing them mowing down hybrids and protocol droids. The same goes for those two turrets in Hydro. The turrets in Ops are also quite useful when on your side. Even the missile turret in Command is useful, because it will kill the Psi Reaver for you. Nanites are plentiful in the game: I hack everything in sight, and usually reach the last Replicator, in the BOTM, with over 6000 nanites.
If for you a turret is only maybe killing a pipe hybrid before blowing up, then you're probably doing it wrong :p

So yeah, when did you notice the similarities between the two aforementioned levels?
I was really lucky, because i beated System Shock level 1 before i started SS2. So, when i reached that part, my hearth started to fill with warm feelings.
However, i finished Shock 1 far after Shock 2... I was really pissed off with its controls and sometimes with its graphics too; so i had to have long breaks on my playthrought. Hell, after all it was 2006 when i started it. A mouselook would be a blessing to that game as it could make the controls far more intuitive.

Over allows you to fire a more powerful projectile at the cost higher energy use and increased time between shots. Over can take out Protocol Droid in one shot if I remember right.
Energy weapons are underpowered? I play on Impossible with energy weapons all the time and I waltz onward like a battery powered Humphrey Bogart.

For me, the issue would be more about whether or not I've got the hack skill to hack all those turrets, it depends on your character build. Also, playing with Ayla Mod and Zylonbane's no health bar mod, makes dodging protocol droid explosions and hacking bots down to 1hp and then shooting them once a mite harder.
DentonSHODAN on 2/5/2009 at 18:53
Could someone explain to me how exactly one goes about hacking turrets?
I've played through the game twice, but I never even knew you could hack turrets. I thought the most you could do is shut down security and then proceed to destroy all turrets/cameras.

It takes more than a few shots to take down a bot, especially the Assault and Security ones. Besides, if you meleé them, they can't shoot you (as long as they're not backed up against a wall or other obstruction)

Turrets hardly ever drop anything useful, though. I've only ever found batteries, standard bullets, and maybe the occasional maintenance tool on them, and that's if they have anything at all. They don't even give you health modules (or whatever they are) when you have that robotic health OS upgrade installed.

Because I've never had them die with just one shot from a laser pistol. Maybe they do with the LP on overload like General Four said, but I've never tried it. I always have shotgun shells coming out the wazoo anyway, since I hardly ever use the shotgun for anything else.

This is also very true, but it's a little difficult to master, and I don't really blame anybody who'd rather shoot them (although it
is rather fun, and a nice challenge for someone who's played the game before).

Holy crap. I have problems with my inventory as it is.....

Same here, although usually a couple thousand less, 'cause I tend to go overboard on hypos and med kits before heading into the BOTM (I also always forget about the med kit Replicator there until I get to it).

Well, if you put your CMs into hacking rather than Energy... ;)
I kid, I kid. A fair point when you're talking about the higher difficulty levels where upgrades are more expensive.

Okay, I'll give you that bit about the bots; not being able to see their health would indeed make that difficult (either that, or it would force you to get better at it ;)). I can't comment on the droids, though; I don't know how Ayla's mod changes them.

You run up to them, right-click on them, and click the "Hack" button, just like anything else you can hack. It's easier if you take down security first (that is, the turrets won't try to shoot you as you approach them; the hack difficulty is the same), but you don't have to.

Oh, wow. Thanks, Enchanter. That's hilarious. I thought I figured out everything about the game, but nope, that's not the case. Haha. Now I know what I'll do on my Impossible run. :p
