I played System Shock for the first time a few days ago, but I just beat SS2 again - by DentonSHODAN

And holy crap, the final level in System Shock 2 is the first level in System Shock! Old news to you guys, I know, but wow, I've gained a whole new appreciation for that section of the game. lol
Oh, and I went energy/psi/exotic for my second run (on Hard), and I really want to know why everyone bashes energy weapons. Not only do they look cool, but they're not nearly as useless as many of you make them out to be. The EMP rifle in particular is badass.
So yeah, when did you notice the similarities between the two aforementioned levels?

Who bashes energy weapons?

Mostly because the Laser Pistol and Laser Rapier aren't spectacular, and so that's a lot of points that, instead of improving your pistol, shotgun, and assault, are improving a couple weapons of dubious usefulness.
I think energy weapons are cool and fun, but the assault rifle is still the best gun in the game, and early on, doing a little more damage with the shotgun is very useful.

Everyone. They are horrendously underpowered compared to the other weapons.

Free. Ammo.

I always take energy so I can get through Engineering and Hydro with a minimum of fuss.
And then on Ops and beyond...well I never even realized that cyborg assassins were actually dangerous until the first time I decided to skip Energy 6. If anything is overpowered, it's the EMP rifle.

Agreed. The EMP Rifle is anything but underpowered. It's my favourite weapon in SS2. I think it is a worthy successor of the Magpulse, with the extra advantage of splash damage. I also like the Laser Rapier and use it all the time, although I wish it could be as powerful as the original one from Citadel Station.
Damn, I think it's time to play the original Shock. Again.

I don't usually use the Laser Pistol or the EMP Rifle. In fact, I've played SS2 several times, and I don't think I've used the EMP Rifle once. I do, however, use the Laser Rapier. I agree that it's not as powerful as it's predecessor, but I still love it. When running through desolate, carnage-strewn halls, I can find comfort in the soothing hum and the soft glow of my Laser Rapier. :)

The laser pistol is a godsend early on - energy 1 and repair 1 is a pretty cheap investment for a weapon which solves all of your turret and bot problems. Modify 1 is also cheap for more damage and charge. By the time you get to ops, you can have two or three of them handy set to over, and you can easily take down anything other than an arachnid, even if one of them does jam on you, and the only cost is a few nanites here and there for repairs - a hell of a lot less than if you were buying maintenance tools.
The laser rapier is crap, since you might as well be using the laser pistol or EMP rifle on bots, and the wrench isn't really any worse on hybrids and the like.
The EMP rifle is possibly the second best weapon in the game, definitely worthy of SS1's magpulse. You can easily lay waste to everything electric, and don't need to worry about wasting bullets on protocol droids. The downside is that it's hard to repair and maintain, but since it's probably the most common weapon on the Von Braun after pistols and shotguns, that doesn't matter so much.

I'm like you; I played SS2 first, so I didn't notice until I played SS1.

Why on earth carry three Laser Pistols when you can have one Laser Rapier which can smack the crap out of the bots and then take them down with a single pistol bullet? As for turrets, I just hack them and let them do dirty work for me.

The shotgun takes Protocol Droids down in three shots, and ammo is abundant due to all the shotgun hybrids running around.
