I mean, what are the Simulation Units on the Ops deck normally used for? That was never clear to me. Of course I don't know what Quantum, Interpolated, and Linear refers. And how is the Many and/or The Machine Mother using them for what purpose of theirs?

I'm not entirely convinced that the Von Braun's crew even knew what those Sim units did.

I got the impression that they were large computers used to calculate the routes for the FTL drive.
The Many may have needed to hack them to get back to Earth, and of course SHODAN wanted them for her "hack the universe" plan.
No evidence for this idea, it's just what I thought.

They're used to give the player something to do. Next question.

Seems most likely.

I just always thought they were simulation units, each with a different purpose, Quantum ( physics ), Linear ( physics ), and Interpolated ( judging the state of one of the prior two from the standpoint of the other ). From what little I know and remember of them, quantum physics will allow FTL travel, while conventional physics won't without breaking some rules, so the two don't correlate properly in some areas. There's also the issue of figuring out where the hell you are when linear physics are suspended in FTL, which probably makes more sense of the term 'interpolated'.
Big number cruncher boxes, that conveniently fit into the plot?
:-)

It is also important to consider the fact that SHODAN needed control of the Sim Units to take control of the ship away from Xerxes. So in addition to the likelihood that they were involved with the FTL drive, they probably had something to do with data routing and management.

When reading the topic I thought "Ok, now we're gonna read several posts about flowers and bees and such."
But then, some posts later, it occurred to me that I forgot there are other simulation units (for much more scientific use) as well. :p
Maybe I mixed up the words 'simulation' and 'stimulation'.
Thinking of it -- are they actually for scientific (FTL) use? It may need some big machines to... Ok, I'll stop that.

Hehe Firefreak, I thought that as well.
Possibly SHODAN was trying to overload Xerxes in some way - maybe hacking the sim units was the future equivalent of a DoS attack.
I'd better stop before I fancome.

You people do realize that the game tells you exactly what the Many and SHODAN wanted with the sim units, right?
