The CPU (the motor that runs your computer) has a name. I may be something like Intel XXX Quad core, or AMD XP Athlon 2 etc.
Look at the Control panel SYSTEM and see what it says about the CPU. In XP it shows up in the DEVICE MANAGER part. The General Tab, shows you the operating system the CPU name and number of cores, and the amount of Memory RAM you have.
A quick check is to run DXDIAG in the Start>Run> type DXDIAG in the blank and hit OK.
Then the first page will have all that information.
Note it and then tell us.
It's Intel Core"2 Duo. It was on the front of my computer. :eww:

OK. Ignoring the fact that VISTA is a problem of its own, your CPU is actually
two chips. It is a Two-core (multi-core) chip. The newer chips have two, three, or four "cores" (are able to work like 2, 3, or 4 independant chips.
THIEF won't run with those, so you need to set the chip to only use one. You do this by setting the "infinity" to tell the chip that THIEF is to run with ONE core.
Search the Legacy thread (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=153)
and the Technical thread (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=81)
For VISTA, Multi-core, and other "keywords" of a similar nature. There are some who have gotten THIEF to run on VISTA, and lots of information on how to set the "infinity" for a single core use.
I can't help you, but
Bikerdude and a couple of others are very good at that.
You might post your "HELP" in one or both threads.
Good luck.

I pointed her towards the DDFIX in her other help thread (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128253)
Fm problems.
It seems as she does not use it. If she applies the patch, the multicore issue will be fixed as well...

Also the latest beta of GarrettLoader has a fix for multi-core issues (it does it in a non permanent way by changing the affinity of thief 2 (ss2,thief 1) while its loading up. However I haven't really seen many affinity issues on Vista, just XP.

Gloria, can you still use your old computer..if you can try burning your files and folders to disc...I back up my old fms and even a full copy of dromed all ready for action and have never had any problems putting it onto another computer.
As for the pesky hyperthreading thingy...I use the old ctrl/alt/delete trick to open up task manager and under the processes tab, scroll down to thief2.exe, right click it, then scroll down to set affinity and click it and uncheck the boxes to leave only ONE ticked box and click ok, I leave task manager minimised at the bottom of the screen while playing so that its active...sometimes the operating system restarts some progs if you exit task manager.
Its a pain but thats what microsoft have done to us with their continual changing...and now yet another operating system is on its way.

the FM's are not an issue. I had most of them backuped.
I downloaded the DDFIX patch but its not enough.
I'm still looking in to it.

I am in the same predicament as you Gloria. I was forced into buying a new computer in March. I have to use my notebook computer with my old monitor to play thief.
I think Windows 7 is being released in October or November.
