I need a good character... - by Shortee

I know some people will probably think this is stupid, and that I'm an idiot for asking this, but can some people who have made very good characters please tell me what they had as their race, major skills, and minor skills? I can't ever make up my mind... I mean, I'm trying to make a mage. I make him to what I think should be really good, but then he's really slow, dies in a few hits, or something else really bad happens. (Also, if this changes anything, I have the Xbox Morrowind...). So, if anyone out there has a awsome character, please tell me :) I have a level 12 Assassin... but that's as far as I've gotten...

Mages are hard in the early levels - they tend to get smacked around a bit. I think this is pretty much true in any RPG - they're the most powerfull in the upper levels, but they get the snot kicked out of them in the early going. I think Bretons or Dunmer make the best mages. Skills - someone else can pick up the ball from here.

i think it just comes down to personal taste...
because that is what defines good...
my character is good... the more i played him the better i like him and the better
i play as that character... the only thing i'd do different now is choose a different
start sign at the beginning...
i play a dark elf assassin... and i've spent a pretty penny getting his magic skills up..
because that's how i like it... so now i got a character who can sneak, pick locks and fight and shoot real well... but also can cast just about any restoration, mysticism, destruction or illusion spell... (i think there is two more schools of magic i haven't
bothered with yet)...

I play a Dark Elf Battle Mage Custom Class under the sign of the Atronach.
(By custom class i mean i removed marksman and added athletics as a minor skill).
Zaphod is right that mages seem to start off weaker than others and then at later levels surpass all other classes. In my opinion the best mages are indeed Dark Elf and Breton but High elves are also powerful but they suffer from being even weaker at the beginging.
IMHO the best (an by that most useful) college of magic for a low level mage is conjuration. Being able to summon weightless bound armour and weapons is a massive advantage and the art actually ups your intelligence while your doing it! Remember even if you specialise in unarmoured the bound armour works (the bound cuirass actually fortifies your heavy, medium, light, and unarmoured skills by 5pts).
Your star sign is also important for a mage - i picked the atronach because the advantages far out way the disadvantages and in conjunction with the summon ancestral ghost i can restore my magica without the need of potions. The mage and apprentice are of obvious benefit just make sure you take into account your overall weakness to magicka after racial abilities and star sign are accounted for.
I guess that you'd prefer a mage hybrid character like a battlemage, spell sword, or nightblade rather than a pure mage character. If you give me an idea of what sort of character you'd like to be i'd be glad to help - its best to choose a standard class and then say how you'd like to change it.

The fastest, easiest, and most painless way to get to high levels, is going mainly fighter/thief.
Most useful skills:
Longblade(Most weapons in the game are longblade, especially the higher ones);
Marksman(Borders on bug abuse, but you can kill just about anything without taking any damage by standing on something higher and just shooting the enemy);
Alteration(Levitate, waterwalking, waterbreathing are the most useful spells in the game, and you will probably use them alot).
Enchant(Constant effect and cast on strike enchantments are most popular, and having a high lvl in this skill makes strike enchantments use up less charge).
Heavy/light armor(One or both, it makes no difference, best armors in the game are heavy and light)
Security(The number of locked and trapped doors in the game are too high to count. IMO, its easier to just probe and unlock a door than bother with the alteration spell to unlock and try and absorb the trap's magicka).
Sneak(The number of quests that require you to sneak around is also too high to count.)
Alchemy(The easiest skill to level, and it makes up for all those other magic skills because you can make potions that wont fizzle, wont use magicka, and it lets you use all those ingredients that you find everywhere).
Speechcraft(A hard skill to level, but taunting is one of the most useful things to be able to do, as a last resort).
Athletics(Running is something you have to do all the time, and running fast is something you will definately want to be able to do)

Athletics(Running is something you have to do all the time, and running fast is something you will definately want to be able to do) I'd replace Sneak and Speechcraft with Illusion :
Frenzy Humanoid and Charm gives you the effect of Speechcraft and Invisibility and Chameleon can be vastly superior to Sneak.
And then add in Mysticism :
Soul Trap is easy enough to cast but it doesn't hurt not to fail at it. Mark/Recall and Almsivi/Divine Intervention are some of the best spells to know and be good with. Telekinesis can really help if you want to steal something or open a door/chest without activating a trap. Absorb Health is the best damage spell when considering how rare resistance to it is and what it actually accomplishes.
This will put a slightly higher drain on magicka, but Alchemy takes care of that easily and cheaply.

Personally, I find the fastest way to level is to a) hunt down many of the unique relics in the game, especially a weapon, the Amulet of Shadows, and b) enough glass and/or daedric stuff to sell to Creeper to gain around 50,000 gold. With the gold (this is for a combat class. If you're a thief who wants to be able to pick a level 100 lock with an apprentice's pick, you won't like this), Create an open lock 100 on touch amulet (costs somewhere between 15,000 gold and 28,000 gold), Amulets of Soultrap, Mark, Recall, Almsivi Intervention and Divine Intervention (ie, Mysticism is now in item form).
Next, with the amulet of shadows and amulet of Open-All at your command, its time to go vault raiding. Start with Hlaalu, it is by far the easiest to loot. I recommend ignoring the solid gold and gem stashes, and JUST going for their sets of glass armor and enchanted weapons. You can easily make 150,000 gold for training and enchanting.
One more tip: Find Dram Bero as soon as you get a scroll of Ondhusi's Unhinging. A free daedric weapon for finding a VERY easy-to-find dungeon is invaluable (Its called Vassir-Didanat, and is near the Odai Plateau on the other side of the river).
Well I went on way too far... If you have any questions, keep asking.

race plays an important role,
I'm playing as an Argonian this time.... I like it!
ok so yes everyone hates you, but who cares, you have a +5 or so in illusion so just force people to like you....
top reason I'd play as one again.... they are fast, much faster than humaniods and in the begining when it takes 3 full days to walk from seyda neen to balmora this will make you very happy, you might even have a chance to run from a scrib!
did I mention water breathing? sorta cheap as you need magika but if you swim you will find all sorts of cool things, pearls anyone... hidden underwater ruins... its all there waiting for you.
anyhow the skills are yours to choose from, I like unarmoured for beast chars as they cannot wear boots or most helms.
you make the call

I have to say Argonains do look cool - i have a very low level ninja class Argonian Male under the sign of the thief and his speed and the way he holds his dai-katana (off to the side at an angle instead of straight up) looks really good.
Many people put races down like Argonains because they don't have bonuses in things like heavy armour or long blade etc but don't be put off by this - later on this makes not one bit of difference.
The water breating isn't as much of a cop out as it's reputation makes it - its a spell not a power so you can use it more than once a day. The spell itself lasts for 120 seconds never fails and only costs 5 mana - what more do you want?
Put it this way take your self along to the many under water grottos straight out of Seyda Neen and you can collect tons of pearls!
Djflip is right about the unarmoured skill - you need it either in major or minor - i have it in minor and major in light armour; glass armour looks really good on Argonians but please refame from wearing the helm...
Oh and a special metion should go to how Argonians are animated swimming - they use their tail like a crocodile which looks great.
Beat races will never be as uber powerful as heavy armoured, long blade weilding spell casters but if you stick with them to a high enough level their apparent weaknesses will fade away...
Oh and Argonian Vampires look really cool - their fangs come out over their lower jaw like a saber tooth tiger's fangs but smaller.
Cheers :eww:

:thumb: I have a redguard warrior under the sign of the ritual. he is totally kick ass. he can turn undead which is a handy skill in the beginning of the game if you happen to wander into the wrong cave. he has mara's gift which makes him able to heal himself 100 points once per day and also an added bonus is adrenaline rush. That amps all your stats 50 points and lasts for 60 seconds. I am at level 42 and he is damn near invincible. i havent died or even come close in a long time.
I have managed to get myself some nice armor and got lucky with a few magical items and my strength is at 120, my agility at 130, speed at 100, and am working now on my magic skills. I can handle most any opponent with only a few strikes of my daedric battleaxe. Anyway, sorry, went off on a tangent, he is a great way to start the game with and maybe even finish it with.
