When I was 12, If I Had a Million Dollars was the greatest song ever written.
Maybe it's nostalgia alone, but I don't find it cloying. I still love all of their first album (Gordon). From then on they became more and more serious until depressing stuff like Tonight Is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel. Born on a Pirate Ship was one of my favourites. Never bought their last album.
As for their live show, I've seen em on a few occasions, and they were not dull at all. In fact they were the opposite, particularily the first time I saw them. It was at a folk festival here in town, back around '93 or '94, when BNL were mostly unknown. They put on a fantastic show, and they still have a better stage presence than many acts. StD is being way too hard on them - they all can sing (and harmonize beautifully), they all can play, and anyone who owns an album or two knows that their songwriting is not at all formulaic (though their radio hits are admittedly similar). For Born on a Pirate Ship they even hired some indian singers to chant on a couple tracks.
I haven't listened to them lately, but the Barenaked Ladies are a part of my childhood. I like their earlier stuff best, but watching them in concert a few years back, and recently on the CBC Tsunami telethon, I won't deny that they still have it.

If I had a million dollars
I'd buy you a green dress
(But not a real green dress, that's cruel)
If I had a million dollars
I'd buy you some art
(A Picasso or a Garfunkel)
If I had a million dollars
I'd buy you a monkey
(Haven't you always wanted a monkey?)

we wouldn't have to eat kraft dinner
(but we would eat kraft dinner)
(of course we would, we'd just eat more!)

Aside from "One Week", I've never heard anything else from this band. After reading this thread, I guess I'm lucky.

I'm sorry that Barenaked Ladies is no good.

I'd rather go for The Darkness.

Yeah, so they slipped in one funny line. That doesn't make the song any less appalling.
Still, though, "Million Dollars" aside, I will admit that the Barenaked Ladies know how to write a song. They know their way around a good melody and they've got a decent sense of humor, even if it ususally works against them.
They're still basically nerdrock for dipshits, though. TMBG without the quirk or inspiration.

You seem to know an awful lot about them.

This chick* I used to hook up with after I graduated college was a huge Barenaked Ladies fan.
I spent a lot of time pretending to like them... just one of those things you have to do sometimes.
But she broke my heart. So fuck her, and fuck the BNL.
*real, real, real cute: imagine Cameron Diaz, except she could use a touch of a nose job.

For a moment there I thought this was a new Vincent thread :p
