Well, to say that lots of end game folks have big egos is true, to say that it ruins or even mildly disturbs the game of a casual gamer, or even a serious gamer isn't true(on my server)
Usually the people who think they're too good to train other people aren't neccesarly the vets, but really just ignorant jerky people, some of which 'are' vets, but after 60 levels of trains, abuse, and jerks, many people abstain from this, in fact, some of the biggest problems arise from the lowbies... my GM friend once got called from monitoring an AoW spawn to a level 20 camp somewhere... /chuckle they really do get mad if you get near their derv camp... =)
Essentially, in EQ, once you are in certain rings of the end game, you know how insignificant you are, and therefore don't propose to act like your farts don't stink. Also, end game folks have to be diplomatic to uphold their reps, like I said before.
(etc, a stranger once asked me to hold 2k worth of stuff so they could transfer it, and I asked why did they give it to me, and they said because me and my guild tag had a good rep...)

*chuckle* I don't have sufficient perspective on your server so I can't effectively argue the point ;) I'm ducking out of this facet of the thread just because I have nothing more to contribute ;)

How many areas are there in Eq that allows you to gain xp/useful items as level 20-40 ?
How many are there for level 50+ ?

Mention/Insult EQ and the whole worlds falls on top of you eh?
to the powergamers(which I have been in some games), I would say that unless there is a HUGE display of "i'm more powerful than you, let me show you!" there isn't much of a problem. Powergamers are something that can't be avoided, but I still don't understand why these people don't need sleep/money/food/sex/outdoor activities. Maybe I'm missing something, but I never got that.
Anyway, I'm not flaming powergamers, just sometimes MY gaming experience, which is based on true RP, is ruined by those who do not.(generally ignorant newbies and powergamers)
Another thing that ruins multiplayer games? EBAY.
Once the money system is broken by 14 year old children with their parent's bankrolls, the game is ... shit.
Either way, cheaters are by far the worst insult to the game, whatever it may be, IMHO.
knife.

Winged, how many level 10-20 or whatever you mentioned are there? Now how many 50-60? The 50-60 Areas are more heavily populated than the 10-20s...

Try reading this thread : (
http://www.cityofheroes.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3437) CoH General > Exp Limits or MMORPG Thoughts II
It's a lengthy discussion (300+ posts) of how to keep the powergamers from having maxed out their characters in a month or so and why you want to prevent that. It also shows how powergamers can (usually unintentionally) destroy the experience for others.
JoJangles on 27/7/2002 at 02:48
I know! I'll read 300 posts! ...
Summarize any 'points' for me, please...
Quite simply, on my server, annoying 'power gamers' (I got the power!!) can be avoided most of the time.
(Oh, it took me about 3-4 days to get through 10-20... How long does it take the average guy to get through 50-60? etc)
Ebay isn't a big problem on my server... Most of the high level people who have no experience in basic grouping aren't ebayers, but just never went to any dungeons or hard places to level etc, nor had any instruction.
The only way to keep powergamers from 'maxing' out their stuff in EQ would be to make the time vrs reward to pooh that they wouldn't do it (IE: the majority of AAXP... charisma etc, a warrior wouldn't do that, nor would an enc do sta(most of the time, not always)
read 300 posts...
Edit: haha, read about 5 sentances and found out it looked like a balance argument in a game that wasn't out yet!! I remember a pvponline.com article making fun of those people...
You follow a few games before their release and see the people complaining about 'balance' and ending up being so wrong =P D2 was funny (The mana shield on the sorc is too powerful!)

So you read 5 sentences from the top post and now know everything said in that thread?
A few points from the thread :
Only ~20% of all players are going to be in the top bracket.
If there are no limits the very top ~2% are going to have seen everything and have every useful item within a month or two.
Those ~2% will complain that there isn't anything for them to do while those who are having fun won't usually bother saying 'Hey, everything is fine. Lots of fun'. This creates the appearance of a larger group of unsatisfied customers than there really is causing resources which would otherwise be spent on expanding low-mid leveled stuff to be diverted to the highest level stuff. More often than not the ~2% will go through newly developed content much faster than was intended causing even more resources being pulled away from the low-mid leveled development.
The average player will never see any of the newly developed content unless he pays another player for a high level character, and even then he will only see some of it.

Isn't it cool how much content is developed for those who are at the top? So many zones JUST for raids! I'll give you that, many raiding zones aren't seeing as much use as say, the Crocs in Oasis... Then again, on my server, many of the top raiding mobs (Like Yelinak, who we got just the other day for our first time) are dead within hours of popping, so obviously it isn't overkill(in the amount of raiding areas) on my server...
btw, there's alot more 50-60 people than any other 10 person bracket (and usually more 55 -60 than any other bracket) (and more level 60 than anything else(except maybe 1 for mules of lvl 60s =D))
etc
Of course, being level 60 doesn't get your foot in the door... it's knowing people in a raiding group that does.

And just about the only way of becoming/staying cool with the guys who do the really big stuff usually means spending 8+ hours a day online, which most players don't have the time to do.
Also how is it cool that 80% of the payers will never see or be able to use most of the newly developed stuff just because they don't live most of their life online?
