Haha ... Sounds like those people on the front row at lawschool, we used to call gunners, because they'd always be gunning off this question or this point in class, always trying to be such a "serious" legal genius, but being more like serious pricks and couldn't be laid back enough to have a drink with everybody, calm down, and enjoy themselves. For some reason law seems to attract those kind of people. I can sympathize with these stories.
All my friends are in firms by now and the grapevine is always buzzing. One of my friends was on the frontlines of the infamous (
http://urbanlegends.about.com/b/a/036918.htm) Sushi memo business, although I think that one was chalked up more to a bored para than lawyer arrogance.
GL with that new position RBJ.
For those keeping score at home, me and girlfriend are taking the NY Bar exam this July and are interviewing with firms after that. Wish us luck. We're neck deep in studying now.
I didn't know you worked on the tobacco litigation RBJ (old news but new to me). In the late 90s I was working for my congressman on all of that. We got to subpoena classified state documents just because we could, so we could answer questions the newspapers couldn't; reminds me of your little thrill in getting hands on them too. ... He was a chain smoker if that gives you any indication of which side he was on.

You'll be happy to know that even years after they get out of law school, and when taking a two day CLE seminar for which there are absolutely no grades, and at 5 minutes to 5 on Friday when everyone just wants to leave, the "gunners" are STILL asking questions.
Fuck those people. I'm leaving for florida tomorrow, and I wanted to start my weekend.
As for the bar exam, (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2774&highlight=kobayashi) I been there, man. Nothing but the best of luck. I'm sure you'll do fine. For all the worrying I did, my raw score on the multistate was just a shade under 170 (as of the date of the Bar/Bri practice, I was only hitting about 90), so just remind yourself that
everyone thinks its going to be worse than it is.

Well I've just recently opened this thread and decided to give my advice on it. First, I can't really fault RBJ because all he did was give his opinion when asked. Given's the other guy's history with the other firms, RBJ's firm would of probably found out too what kind of worker the new guy was and fired him, but only after making a mistake. RBJ didn't really keep someone from getting a job, somewhere the other guy needs to realize how his behaviour is not helping him.
I don't know how accurate the stories of how he was downright anti-social were, there's a degree of effort than you can make, and that you certainly learn by the time you're out of law school, if he was as bad as RBJ described him, he's really a very small minority that I don't think even any of us here would be confortable working with.
Now about the second part, or the discussion in the thread.. I believe I'm a type A personality, I see it as a good thing. What I learned is that everyone, in the skin they're in, think that they have it best and understand life better.
Of course as some points I looked down on those who I considered less logical than me, or less disciplined. Guess what, they do the same about us, and I don't think it's a defense mechanism. Logic today does make you money(figuratively) and it's a valuable talent to have, but apparently those who don't have it don't cry themselves to sleep because they're 'inferior'.
Anyway. Another example would be at work, I couldn't comprehend for the life of me why someone wouldn't spend every day at their job trying to grow as a person, or work for the full time that they're paid. Not only would they not work as hard as me, but also see me as different in a bad way, quite got me mad. Those 'gunners' at the front of the class, they don't do it grudgingly, they do it because they like it. In class, I'm gonna milk my education for everything it's worth. Those in the back also aren't any less studious or not care about their future, they also have different likes and just like the other groups, see the gunners as 'inferiors' or as missing the point. Both groups are wrong about the other, they're also just different. (and you guys know me, give me the right hobby and I'll be on it all day, we're not really robots)
The conflicts might arise because one is the majority, but the other group still has some talents that can be good in business(and sometimes, excellent)
I don't know how things are going to be for me, but I do know that I'm going to adapt, and certainly not be an ass. I hope that somewhere where those leadership traits that might read a checklist of my personality(ok, not quite yet) will help me and I will find me a place where I'm appreciated. I'm studying Economics and planning to go in Finance, certainly when dealing with huge loads of money people will be type A personalities..
Bunglunch, what industry are you working in? and I would like to hear you story and some of the most important things that you feel I should know.

So you know, that post was from like 2 years ago; you won't find Buglunch posting around here nowadays.
Thanks for the encouragement, RBJ ... It's bad enough that I have to
carry all these books to the library. It just reminds me I have to read them all, too! :(
