I just bought SS2...again. - by Horrorshow
I just thought I'd share this for some reason.

So, back in the old days when System Shock 2 was on store shelves in its glorious big box, I happened upon the title at a local electronics store, bought it and brought it home. Shortly after installing it, I was completely immersed and marked it as one of my favorite games of all time. At that time, I had what was then a pretty high end gaming machine and was able to run it flawlessly. I was younger though, and for some reason never really had the patience to finish it.

Unfortunately, times changed, computers broke, and I've had many PC's since then and each one has had some qualm with System Shock 2 and I have never been able to experience it fully. I have gone through the many fixes, played it and each time been distracted and not sat down to finish it.

And then shortly before the release of Bioshock, not having really known how much I valued the game, I loaned it to a friend (stupid!) and never saw it again since the friend moved a way soon after.

Since then, I've seen it spoken about all over, being mentioned in "the most influential games" articles and the like. Whenever someone discusses the supposed "golden age" of PC games, SS2 is named. And with Bioshock just not satisfying my longing for that old experience I have felt sort of empty with out it.

Finally, I decided I couldn't take it anymore and ended up purchasing it online again for 40 dollars (the price I originally payed for it). And recently seeing how easy Thief Gold and Thief 2 could be fixed to work smoothly on my machine with Windows 7 I have high hopes that the installation won't be too much of a hassle.

So, was it worth it? And if you'd lost your copy of System Shock and couldn't obtain it legally anywhere for under the typical price of a decade-old classic, how much would you be willing to dish out for it?
10 dollars on GOG would be nice, it's not like EA needs any more cash, it's more about the game reaching out to more people.

Agreed. But yes, it was definitely worth it.

By the way, is there anyone out there who's running SS2 on 64 bit Windows 7? Like I said, Thief gold and 2 have installed and ran fine for me, but, searching around, there's a significantly greater amount of issues associated with newer computers for SS2 than the thief games.

I'd pay £15 for System Shock 2, and £30 for Shock 1.

I'd pay just as much as a new game would cost and probably more seeing as how SS2 is far better than anything new that's coming out, so that means I would pay at least $50 - $60, but I would probably go up to $70. Maybe even more.
In other words, $40 is totally worth it.
