I have many problems with thief 2. - by Glen4321

I have a Pentium E6750 Dual core computer with a Geforce 8800gts with Windows XP SP2.
When I tried to run the game fresh out of install, it would crash before even entering the game. I then installed the patch available here, version 1.18 with copyright protection gone, and it allowed it to enter the menu.
I would then alt tab in order to manually set it to use one core per the manual instructions here. (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/hyperthreading/) But when I went to do it, I saw it was already only using one core. (CPU 0 is checked CPU 1 is not) I went to start playing the game, and it skipped the first cinema. I don't really care about fixing this, but just saying it so you know all the info. It would crash while loading when the gauge in the right hand corner is about 30 percent done.
I would try to restart the game, but it would go to a black screen, and crash but I could hear the first second or so of the main screen audio, unlike the time it crashed fresh out of the installation. I then restarted the game using compatibility settings for 98, and it ran, but crashes when trying to load a level again.
I don't know if using the imagecfg fix to automatically make it single core on startup would fix it, but the instructions are unclear.
It says...
"Open notepad and enter the following for Thief/G:
imagecfg -u thief.exe
imagecfg -a 0x1 thief.exe
pause
For Thief 2 it's:
imagecfg -u thief2.exe
imagecfg -u thief2.icd
imagecfg -a 0x1 thief2.exe
imagecfg -a 0x1 thief2.icd
pause "
It is saying to edit something with notepad but its unclear. What file do they want me to edit with notebook? Until I know, I can't do this.
Also since I started typing this, I developed a new problem. Whenever my mouse goes over a item in the Thief 2 menu, weird colored dots appear behind it. I dont know what is causing this.
Could someone please help me out? Thanks.

You aren't supposed to edit a file. You are supposed to make a new one.
Do exactly as it says after downloading imagecfg and placing it in the specified system folders.
Since Thief 2 is the one you are trying to get working, you don't need to worry about:
"...enter the following for Thief/G:
imagecfg -u thief.exe
imagecfg -a 0x1 thief.exe
pause"
Open the Notepad program. Do you have the Notepad program installed?
Copy and paste the following into the new document:
imagecfg -u thief2.exe
imagecfg -u thief2.icd
imagecfg -a 0x1 thief2.exe
imagecfg -a 0x1 thief2.icd
pause
Follow the rest of the instructions exactly, reading every word in white.
That's one question answered.:thumb:

Thank you for replying. I understand now what they wanted me to do. Put a file called processor.bat and edit it with notepad to include those instructions. And when I said notebook earlier, it was a typo, I meant notepad.
I did it , and got the message it said I would get.

I loaded thief, and the weird dots still appear behind the menu screens when I mouse over an item. I'm trying to create a screenshot to show what this is, because it appears noone else is having this particular problem. But when I press alt f10 as this website says to do, no dumpxxx file is put in my folder. I would assume maybe this feature is only meant for ingame screenshots, not menu screenshots
And when I go to start new game, the introductory video plays now unlike before, but the game still crashes when I try to start the level. It looks like I may have a problem that isn't dual core related. Can someone you help me out? thanks!

I've heard of the mouse cursor problem, but it's rare and I can't remember what was advised for it. And I believe Alt+F10 only works when you are in a mission. Try Alt+printscreen then paste it into Paintbrush. If that doesn't work, then we'll try something else.
Have you tried these instructions?

My game doesn't freeze during the video. Now it will play the video perfect since applying the imagecfg patch and go to the difficulty selection screen. Its when I press continue and its supposed to load the level it crashes. When it crashes it is a general error, not a video error. It says, "This program has a problem and needs to close" like most other programs in XP say when they crash. Also I have service pack 2 installed, while that says the problem is SP1 releated. And the alt print screen and copy and paste to paint isn't working with Thief 2 for me. I just tried it with my desktop, so I know my printscreen button is working in general, just not in Thief 2. But I am glad to know someone else is having the same dots behind the menu problem so I probably don't have a hardware problem. Thank you for all your help by the way.

That's okay, sometimes instructions for something else can give an unexpected clue. Thanks for sharing the error message. Do you have any programs with a screen-capture function, like Irfanview, for instance? Otherwise, I'm all tapped out of answers, but someone should be here to straighten things out for you.:thumb:

I downloaded irfanview and was able to take this screen shot. Thanks for telling me this. So is this a problem other people or had, or does this problem mean there could be something wrong with my hardware?

That raster hash looks more like a Video problem. If you have XP look at the ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS>EVENTS>SYSTEM and APPLICATION logs.
It should show at the time of the lockup, and if you double click the error will show you a code or even the exact cause.

Interesting. It shows that the THIEF EXE failed in the application.
Application Failure thief 2.exe 1.9.0.0
What country do you live in, where did you get the game, and I think the problem will turn out to be the GFORCE card.
You may need to change the Vcard drivers to an earlier version. I am not familiar with Nvidia based, or GeForce cards. I've never had one work worth a pile of horse crap.
Do a search for Geforce 8800gts Drivers in the SEARCH THIS FORUM and see what you get.
To check the version, open the THIEF FOLDER, scroll down near the bottom and check VERSION PROPERTIES on the THIEF2.EXE. At the bottom will be a PRODUCT VERSION. If it says 1.18 you have a patched version. If it doesn't you might need to patch it. If your version is from the UK or SOLDOUT or PREMIER, then you need a special patch which you can find here: (
