I have issues... - by LuNatic

...with getting Thief: The Dark project to run. I recently purchased the Thief Collection after hearing a lot of good things about it.
I installed Thief 1 and upgraded to the v 1.33 patch, then booted up the game to play. The menu loaded fine, and I started a new game, and loaded the training mission. The initial cutscene played fine, and the first mission briefing popped up. I clicked continue, and *BAM*, the game crashed to desktop, with the texture/memory error.
After some googling, I found my way here to the FAQ thread. I downloaded the 1.3 fix, extracted the new exe the game folder, and tried to boot up the game. It crashed at the same spot, but now brings up windows error reporting. All help is appreciated.

Depending on your video card (you don't say what your have?), you may end up wanting to run the game using DDFix in any case (see the sticky thread), so you might as well try that out and see if it helps.

Alright I'm bumping a way old thread...
I was never able to get Thief:TDP running, so I gave up. Skipping ahead a few months and I now have a new PC, and the inclination to try again. I installed thief, went through all the sticky threads, set the core affinity, used the widescreen patch and booted the game. As soon as the menu loads the game crashes. I set compatibility mode to Win98/Me and disable visual themes and try again. The game loads, and I attempt the training mission. The cutscene plays, and I click continue. The game loads the level and then crashes to desktop immediately after(the same problem as before).
Old PC specs:
Win XP SP2
1.25GB RAM (DDR 400)
GeForce 7600GT AGP
Pentium 4 2.8e
New PC specs:
Win XP SP3
2GB RAM (DDR2 800)
ATI Radeon 4850 (512mb) Catalyst Control Centre 9.6
Core 2 Duo e7400 (2.8Ghz)
So, 2 completely different machines, crashing at the same time(although this one doesn't give the texture error). Any ideas?

Try to run the game in Software mode instead of hardware-accelerated 3D graphics mode. It may not look pretty, but if it runs then, we know it likely has to do something with the graphics mode.

download and install DDFix - (

Hmm, disabling hardware 3d causes it to crash at the same point, but not to desktop. It just freezes with a black screen. DDfix is already applied.
Edit:
Disabling Z-Buffering has the same effect.
Edit 2:
This new issue does appear to be covered in the stickies. The 1.33 fixed exe causes explorer to crash and thief to hang (at the same point).
