i have a sever crash bug, and fear never being able to play.

i am new to this board, and have a problem. i can load up morrowind and start my character. i can follow the guard out of the boat. i can select my race. when i try to enter the first door into the game world, i get booted to my desktop, and have lost everything. i have tried numerous times, and i have downloaded the official patch with bug fixes, and still no luck. please, can someone help me?
