I don't know what's scarier. The fact people actually eat dirt here, or the fact you had that link conveniently on hand.

Once you've heard about that, you never quite forget. And I knew the internet wouldn't either.

Dirt is a good source of minerals. People with certain nutritional deficiencies feel the need to eat it without quite knowing why. "Mmmm, a nice bit of mud would just hit the spot right now."
Its like me and humous, lobster and beer - I'm sure there is something in there that my body neeeeeeeds. :p

I'm sure you've been beaten over the head with this already but I didn't bother to read all the responses. You do understand in the ridiculousness of taking one particular conversation between one particular group of idiots and then generalizing them en mass, yes?
I once met an Australian guy that still thought the world was flat. Fucking Australians am I rite.

If that were the simple case here, I would agree, but this was just one conversation amongst MANY on the internet, where people speak this way about the disaster, and how it's not our job to help them out, so we shouldn't. I also agree they're idiots, along with most people on the internet today, excluding a good 20% of ttlg of course. It saddens me to have to share my air with such greedy people.

SE is dead on with this one. I've heard of a couple accounts (I have a relative thats a psychiatrist) of people who eat dirt as a result of other mental or eating disorders. For example, there was one person who refused to eat anything except corn starch and dirt.

The article says mineral deficiency isn't it, although I'm not sure if/how they'd accurately test that.
You know, but for the lack of some 19th century southern entrepreneur I'm sure we'd be able to find the finest mississippi mud for sale on store shelves next to the salt.
