Hi I got 20 errors:
Using T2 dromed:
"ERROR: degenerate portal in cell ..." 20 of em, showed up all at once.
The tutorial didn't cover what portals or cells are.
(am I following the wrong Tutorial?)
And I know what a degenerate I am,
but what's it mean when a portal is?

short explanation: your portalization failed. the most likely reason this has happened is because you have lots of brushes that are not on the grid. as a rule, make sure the "Use" button in the lower left below "Grid Sz" is turned on when you are making brushes.
if that is the cause in your case, you can snap all problem brushes to the grid at once by going to Hilight>Hilight Unsnapped, and then Hilight>Gridsnap Hilighted. this will snap their sizes and positions to fit the current grid size.
if its not unsnapped brushes causing it, very detailed or very complex brushwork is likely to be the cause.
longer explanation: when portalizing, dromed is slicing up the entire space (air and water) of your level into convex areas that are called "cells". a "portal" is where two cells abut. kind of like when you have (

a degenerate portal is one where (due to the shapes and sizes of the brushes involved, and the limited precision of the maths used to calculate all this) it ends up being incomplete in some way. its not really a very useful error message for an fm author; but you can at least find out where the error is happening by putting in the command cell_teleport <number>, with the cell number shown in the error message, e.g. cell_teleport 123. it is most likely

I built 10 funnels, out of 12 sided pyramids, with 10 smaller air pyramids inside, = 20 total.
The USE button was lit the whole time, and the centerlines snapped to the grid.
But of course every third plane wouldn't be.
'Teleport camera to cell' confirmed it.
I have now rebuilt it with 8 sided pyramids, and the problem is gone.
(I have about 100 12sided cylnders that don't give me errors)

glad you got it sorted out. yeah, normally you can use pyramids and cylinders without trouble. but when it gets small or complex, then errors can start to creep into the portalize. what grid size are you using?
