I think I've done quite a bit of this game out of sequence. I've killed the Goblin King and now find myself facing a four-number coded door, the code to which I don't have.
Reading the only (and incredibly incomplete) walkthrough I can find tells me that I should have visited Arx prior to being even able to get into the Goblin sector. I've been wandering around and met the lonely birthday troll, who wants me to find him a present. Don't get me wrong, I do love to explore, but this is exploration without a purpose or sense of direction.
So, I've resolved to find the City of Arx, but I keep backtracking over the same territory.
Where, pray tell, is it?

a.) you shouldn't have killed him. you should have exited the initial dungeon, fought a few goblins, gone surface-side and gotten a quest to go to arx. after that, if you get the right credentials, the goblins should not be your foes and you should not attack them.
b.) your walkthrough is wrong, you go past the goblins on your way to arx. go through the goblin area and search that map until you find an exit going UP. then go UP. search the next map (caves) for another exit going up.
the way up is to the left of the troll compound, down near the stairs into the river
c.) though you shouldn't have been dealing with the goblin king safe at this point anyways (everything with the goblins/trolls comes later), the combo is hidden in his bedroom.
look under the blanket on his bed
d.) how did you even enter the goblin compound before visiting arx? the way to raise the portcullis is something that comes after visiting arx

Obviously, a bug.
With my bow, I shot the guard that refused entrance to me. He then raised the portcullis and I dashed through.
If this is the level of quality I can expect from the developers of Arx Fatalis, then I think I have been well and truly ripped off.
I may uninstall this game and seek a refund.

You know, if the game is this buggy and so poorly designed at such an early stage I shudder to think how much worse it can get.

I would hardly call your problems due to bugs, they are, rather, due to your own incompetence.
a.) you claim to have looked all over for the way to arx, the fact that you didn't find it wasn't that it was hidden buggily, but that you didn't follow an obvious path to the left of the troll encampment. and if you had READ the IN-GAME messages rather than just relied on your walkthrough, you'd have been told that you need to go through goblin caves and then go up.
b.) the goblins talk to you and pose no threat, one of them is behind a door and won't let you through at the moment. your solution: kill them all.
rather than think "I should return later to enter" or "they're talking to me and not attacking, maybe I shouldn't treat them as enemies" you kill them all, unprovoked. then you bitch about how, when you kill the other characters in the game, you can no longer interact with them or continue the plot that relies on them.
c.) you complain that you can't find the combo for a private safe. it's obviously a secret combo, would you rather if everything was handed to you and there were no challenges? which brings me to..
d.) you go through the game following a shitty, spoiler-ridden walkthough rather than try to follow the game plot.
e.) re: polsius, you say 'not now' when he (or any NPC) is in the middle of saying something to you already. wait for him to finish first.
it sounds like all the 'bugs' are with you, not the game. Maybe you should play a game geared towards dumber players, like Neverwinter Nights, or Diablo 2. in those everyone who's a friendly is immortal, in case the player is stupid enough to repeatedly attack their allies. and in those you never need to search for things or bother to follow a plot.

In fact, you should thank them for taking the time to make such an 0w|\|34z game. I have 2 solutions for you --
- Look around and remember that there will always be a second option rather than fighting.
- Or find a better walkthrough, or go through the game by yourself.

heh a bug is a problem with the program, the game is only linear in story, not actions.
i also found myself anhialating the goblins before ever going to arx, i accomplished this by pissing off the trolls somehow, ended up in their camp, whacked the stationary goblin, he ran for help and boom open gate.
ive hit these repeatable bugs, a) meteor sabre dissapears if you nchant while holding it.
b) frogs have auto levitate over any lily pad :)
c) akbaa immortal? ive been fighting him for 2 and a half hours now and for some reason his life bar wont decrease, magic/ meteor sword, not a thing works.
theres probably a trick to it.
