I have had Morrowind for a couple years now. Never got around to playing very long. I think the highest level character I got was 7, and never did too many missions. Always ended up wandering around looking for cool stuff in the middle of nowhere, and just exploring the island. Never saw more than about 10% of the mainland and never even got close to checking out the expansions' content. I basically thought it was an ok game, just kinda lifeless, and too big.
Well, last week I re-installed it. I was itching to play again for some odd reason. This was a great idea. I made a Khajiit that has high #'s in speechcraft, merchant, sneak, security, acrobatics, athletics, short blade, light armor. I started immediately focusing on raising levels and finding missions. Well, here I am @ level 10 w/several side-missions completed, and no working on the imperial cult quests, blades, and going to do a few for the guilds.
I am completely impressed w/this game now. I get excited at work just thinking about getting home to make some progress. Instead f seeing this big, unfocused mess of a game ahead of me, I see a world that's mine to explore. My character has goals, and I am sort-of role playing how I think this guy would act. Just incredible how deep and how satisfying this game has been so far.
Anyway, my point was, I wanted to ask if anyone else had a similar experience w/ Morrowind (or, well, any other game for that matter ) where they didn't quite grasp it the first time or two they picked it up, but ended up trying it again and having it all come together then?

Though I know it's not a Looking Glass game. I've always like LG games and because it was on the TTLG forum purchased it a few years ago.
The initial time I played it was in spare time after work and I thought it was soso. But I started to get extensive holidays,as the Company I worked for owed me 865 hours annual leave and they decided to start getting it down. So I started getting 4 weeks off at a time several times a year. In one of these extended holidays I played it properly and now I thouroughly love it and am really looking foreward to "Oblivion". I've play it numerous times since.

First time I played, I thought it would be an average game. I didn't really know what to expect, but I wasn't expecting much.
It was when I first traveled off road that I realized this was different. I decided to go off a path once, and thought there would be some sort of wall stopping me from going any further. Instead I just kept going. I think I ended up finding a Sixth House shrine after wandering around for a while. After that incident the game just facinated me.

yeah, I am now level 20, and am starting to get to visit some of the more distant locales! Some of the architecture in the isolated parts of Vvardenfell is incredible!

I left Ald Ruhn a while back and headed for Sadrith Mora on Thieves Guild quests. I ran into a lady who needed to get to Ghostgate, and took her there and decided to just head east across the mountains. Man was is cool, I came across wreckage that I think was giant metal robot or space ship parts. Everywhere I go I see something new and awesome. I can not believe I never tried this years ago. I too only tried it because it was here at ttlg.com, and boy am I glad I did. I got the game of the year edition with the addons so I have a lot of playing to do, but man what fun its going to be.

P.S. Wish I could play Oblivian but my system is just below the minimum requirements.

Yeah, seen that too, some kinda UFO. Think its a part of the Giants Mod since when i activated it it spawned some Robot Boss Thingie and Giants adds similar, smaller ones. Not sure tho.

Oh, cause I am playing "vanilla" Morrowind. I am on my first playthrough, and want to experience it like this before I go about modding it into somethin unrecognizeable. I don't have half the probs most people do w/Morrowind's graphics and dialogue, etc...so there is no real pressing need.
