Officially, multiple posts are looked down on, because they cause extra database-hits for displaying the thread.
I don't think you'll get in serious trouble for it though, and I know that if it's been a reasonable break between two comments I tend to put the new one in as a new post rather than an edit so that it shows as an Unread comment to people who've visited in between my posts.
