To me Human Revolution is like a bad joke, for many reasons. And nostalgia does not apply in my case, because I played Deus Ex for the first time only in late 2008.

DX3 is nothing of the things mentioned before. Heck there is almost zero environmental physics and only maps void of life.
Are you sure you're talking about HR here? The game is loaded with tons of detail, and people milling around, going about their lives. DX in comparison was fairly bland and empty. Just look at New York compared to Hengsha. The whole area around the 'Ton had, what, 6-7 people walking around? There's no comparison.
And environmental physics? Where? Are you talking about all those crates and chairs you could destroy? Yeah. There were more of those in DX, but it's not something I'd consider a plus or a negative. There were mostly just crates and chairs. And DX did have way too many crates in the game.

Its just one of the games that "pretends to be something". These games are made for people like you, who lost their ability to see the difference between finely crafted achievements of gaming history (dx1) and an all for the profit rip-off like dx3. Dx3 is self confident in citating Blade Runner, Robo Cop and its predecessor but adds NOTHING we haven't seen before. DX1 mix was unique at its time, DX3 mix just got old and is therefore not ground breaking like the original.
There's some cognitive dissonance going on here (I finally got to use the phrase cognitive dissonance in a sentence! +5 internets for me!). I see alot people saying that Deus Ex wasn't a game "made for the masses". And, you know, I guess it wasn't. It wasn't a super huge bestseller, and is mostly remembered by older, hardcore PC nerds like all of us here. Most console players these days would be more likely to remember the absolutely terrible IW than they would the original DX. And chances are good they didn't think it was much of anything special either. So why in the hell would Eidos revive a barely popular brand just to cash out for a quick buck? If they wanted to do that, they could've taken all the money they spent on developing and advertising HR to make yet another cinematic military shooter or something.
Lets face it. Whether you like it or not, HR isn't exactly what I'd call a "mainstream" game, whatever the fuck that is.
Storywise, HR isn't as grandiose as DX was. Nowhere near. But it was much better told. For the most part, it's a much more subtle, mature story, which is told as a first, self contained portion of a much larger tale.
No, Jensen doesn't take on a vast global conspiracy enacted by a huge multinational conglomeration. He's more or less a part of that system himself. Only (initially) concerned with Sarif Industries' stake in the matter. He's their security chief, involved what seems to be nothing more than a rather elaborate example of corporate espionage. It isn't until near the end that he gets to see a glimpse of the bigger picture. He wasn't meant to take on the world. That's Denton's eventual job. HR is about Jensen, and his comparatively small role in the events that eventually lead up to Deus Ex.
I think it's kinda cool that you don't play the hero savior for once, destined to lead the world to freedom. Yeah, you do go head to head with the bigger than big bad guys. But ultimately, you're only able to kick them in the shins, and are only a small nuisance to their overall plans. It's a well told story (though admittedly, it does get a little sloppy towards the end), that ends up making the world feel much larger and scarier than DX's hodge podge of conspiracies and cool urban legend locales.
So does HR have it's problems? Hell yeah it does. It's hardly a perfect game. It's really about as hinky as DX. But is it a great game despite these flaws? My opinion, of course, but I'd say it is.

Yeah but DX1 was 10 years ago. How can they make a game today, where 99% of the level doesn't react to damage. That's to some extend a matter of taste, but I always hoped DX1, Thief,... would be a start for game environments becoming more realistic and detailed. Instead steps are taken into the opposite direction. Sry I rly don't regard DX3s levels to be more believeable, lively whatever NPCs are still sitting around, reading newspapers or doing nothing in the LIMB clinic, while hours over hours pass - nothing changes. That is what the last TEN years since DX brought us? THAT is simply not enough for me. If you say all that stuff isn't important for you, that's perfectly fine - but for me it ruins the fun in playing DX3.
At the end of the day DX3 is a "COD sniper mission experience" with Illuminati and cloak augmentation thrown in, that's not what DX started, but it is what I expected Eidos Montreal would make out of it.

Do wuh? Okay. You either like it or you don't. Whatever. It's subjective. But how the hell do you play HR and think "this is exactly like COD"?
You...you have...actually played the game, right? The only things I can think of that directly correlate between the two is that they're both first person, and you shoot guns.

Dethtoll game related usernames on a gaming forum makes pretty perfect sense to me without eliciting questions about anyone's self identity. I think most people who have criticised the game have constantly reiterated that they did indeed enjoy the game and played it the whole way through so again you're wrong there.
Rather than insulting people why don't you actually join in the debate and counter some of our criticisms instead of insulting us because we have a different view.
I have. You're just ignoring it to play martyr and keep on repeating the same old "it's not exactly like DX1 so it SUCKS" nonsense that you and certain others went straight for.

My problem is not that it is not exactly like Deus Ex, after 10 years it would be silly and fanboyish to hold such expectations. My problem is that by any metric it is a seriously flawed and fairly bland experience.
If you pour a glass of wine into a barrel of sewage, you are still left with a barrel of sewage. I found Human Revolution to be a step backwards in many ways from Invisible War.

I agree. For me, the criticism for IW (doubtlessly inferior to DX1, but I could still enjoy it) was as overstated then as is the praise for HR now. It makes me sad to see the series being developed in this direction and I sincerely hope (though without much conviction) that Thief 4 will be a different story for once. I guess if Dishonored also fails to live up to expectations, I'm stuck with T2 FMs for years to come. :cheeky:

I just got the game last night and played for a couple of hours. I miss multi-tools and lockpicks. There is a lot of detail in the world but it seems 90% of it there more for aesthetic reasons so it kind of sucks that there's not more interactive stuff. Then again, I've just started so hopefully things will pick up in that regard. One of my favourite parts of the original was exploring and finding stuff in out of the way places.
The game (so far), sorta reminds me of a cross between Snowblind and IW which isn't necessarily a good thing, (although I enjoyed both of those games to some extent), but we'll see. Now that I'm used to it, I'm finding I quite like the 3rd person view for stealth and it's not bothering me nearly as much as I thought it would. The 3rd person takedowns though? I find them really fucking annoying.
Question though. Should I disable highlighting? I'm tempted to, but there's so much crap lying around not sure if it's a good idea or not.
BTW; If anyone needs to know, you can play it on a crappy comp, as I'm using dual core Athlon 2.3 gig, 3 gigs of ram, and a 9400GT. Doesn't look very good and I'm having to run it at 800X600 with most options off, but not a big deal to me.
