It's not like you have to beat the other guy into submission.
Where's the fun in that, then?

I think it's in spearing them with cold precision directly into the heart and then stepping back and staring at your nails as you say "sorry about that old man, had to be done you see" as they try not to get blood on the nice marble flooring. Sort of the way some people here argue.

looks cool, I can take this next semester if I want, I'm still trying to figure out if I should...quick question, what is there to this sport after you are done with the class?

I don't think I will ever be done with the classes or the learning I'm getting from it. I am still incredibley crap at it. I have moved on to join a club three months ago. For me it could turn into a lifelong sport like soccer will likely be, or it might just be a year or two of learning something different. There's the competeing to look forward to and its pretty fun getting to stab someone for sure. But its like a zen. Ok yes it is. My instructor has told us so..I finally found something that has the elements of a martial art that benefits mind and body and a satisfaction of facing off with someone in a controlled environment. The things you focus on like Balance. Without it, you fail. You need it to know exactly how far your point is from your opponent and a sense of how far you can get it with extentions and lunges.
Then you have your Timing. In getting into a rythm and how you and your opponent are moving together. You have to try and read where they will be moving next..And then your "finesse" falls into stride in how you apply point control and blade angle. Your power comes from balance and positioning not muscle power as I thought before. Moving their blade out of line, not hitting the target necessarily. The rare times it's all fallen into place for me gives you a feeling of pure badassedness!
It seems a bit boring at first, when your learning the basics such as footwork, lunge, parry positions, at least it was for me since I didn't get to hold a weapon for the first three lessons and then it was against a wall! That part is hard when you just want to get to the sword part. The past five months I have been at this, I have never applied so much into endurance, agility, coordination and determination in such a different way from football. The game is equally mental and physical.
But then again, I might not be getting very far for a while. I got my elbow looked at a couple of days ago. The xrays didn't show much but the doctor reckons there's a chip and possibly bone fragments lying about. Can't do much else but to wear a sling and I've ditched that because I'm not able to extend my arm after wearing it. I think, much like say a knee injury, you'd be better trying to walk it off, or bend it off. I've been able to get back to a match after worse damage to my knees, so Im expecting to get my arm up in nine days..Keep the arm working as opposed to keeping it bent all the time.
I don't know. Does anyone have any advice on coping with a chipped elbow and some fast remedies?
Sorry I've gone o.t Thief13x I'd recommend you try it. Take an introductory lesson or two, then you'll know if its for you.

You can't do much to really speed the healing of the bone--besides making sure you are getting all your vitamins C & D, and magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, while avoiding sugar, alcohol, caffeine--you know--just eating right.
But what other deep injuries do you have in the vicinity?
jimjack on 10/3/2008 at 04:20
I hadn't even considered diet in this, much less having been told about it by the doctor himself. Thanks for that.
The pain I get is more like a deep one that extends from my hand right to my neck. It's been like having arithritis lately..The sharp pain that makes me want to pass out is when I bend my elbow and I've been at that pretty ruthlessly at times.. It's still pretty swollen as well. There is some numbness in my hand which the doctor reckons is due to compression of the nerves from the fall and that is not going to be fixed either way. It doesn't necessarily mean I'll be living with it. I hope not anyway.
The worse of it was, getting the gravelly bits taken out of the gash, I had to have my head between my knees while the nurse cleaned it. I'd rather go through that again then to have to sit on a gimped arm for another three weeks though.
Stupid skateboard.

Yikes! That certainly sounds like nerve pinching, or clamping, or whatever torturous devices the swelling is applying to the main nerve. Sorry man, that's not something you ignore. Have you been given advice on how to reduce that swelling? Elevation? Cold packs? A friggin' drainage tube or shunt?
jimjack on 10/3/2008 at 05:20
The swelling should go down eventually I'm told even though its been a few days.. but a combination of elevation, heat compresses and cold packs and lots of sympathy from everyone around me. *Whine*
No drainage tubes/shunts:wot:! I certainly hope not!

Naw. Just go easy on that nerve! Without it, the muscles won't work either. Patience. Distraction from the tasks you cannot do for a time.

Protip: Swelling goes down because the injury has had a chance to rest and heal.
No rest=more swelling
