Clearly it stinks - but how does it taste?
As bad as it smells :) Some folks think it doesn't taste near as bad as it smells, but the smell is so overwhelming in your mouth that you wouldn't know. It seriously tastes like rotting garbage.
(p.s. sorry about the title, thanks for changing that)

Have you ever tasted rotting garbage? Seriously though, smelly tofu is a LOT milder than lots of European cheeses, and smells much less pungent.

Smelly tofu is an acquired taste.
Yep. Same with live octopus and silk worm pupa, both of which I tried, among other things. Live octopus is actually pretty good with chili paste, although I did have trouble keeping it from crawling back up my throat. Silk worm pupa is probably the grossest thing I ever ate in my life, but once I got past the visuals, the texture and consistency felt on my tongue, and the juices that squirted out when I bit into it, I could see myself getting hooked on it. I haven't tried stinky tofu, yet, but I know it's something you cannot get the full effect of unless you are brought up on it.

yeah but seriously, regardless of how it tastes, who's putting something that smells like shit in their mouths in the first place? A very sick person I bet

Dirty Sanchez? :p
i have some Danish coworkers, and i have tried some of their less "American-friendly" cheeses and found them delicious. i have not tried the variety that involves burying cheese in the ground inside a pot that is handed down from generation to generation - that is, a pot that is never washed. Supposedly if you put that cheese under a microscope, you will see things moving in it.
Still, i have yet to find a cheese as pungent as Stinky Tofu. i'm glad i tried it, but i doubt i'll be trying it again.
