So the marvellous 30 minute downtime turned into a 95-minute downtime during which time I managed to accomplish nothing.
I was upgrading PHP4 to PHP5 in the hope of eradicating the error we've been having lately. This error will manifest itself to you guys as "There appears to be a problem with the database"
Anyway, PHP5 hangs when attempting to load php_mysql.dll. There's no error message, no nothing, it just sits there loading when I run a php script - any php script, even <?php phpinfo();?>
This was with ISAPI PHP5.1.1. I've uploaded PHP5.0.5 which I've been running on my own machine, along with an old dump of the forums DB, so I know it works and still no joy
For the meantime I've reverted back to php4, so now I intend to run around php forums like a headless chicken trying to find a solution.
If you've got any ideas, let me know, cheers!

I mistyped the path to PHP in the Windows 'PATH' Environmental Variable. Apparently it didn't guess that c:\pgp\ meant c:\php\.
Basically php_mysql.dll was loading, but was unable to find libmysql.dll despite it being in the same folder as the main PHP dll.
