But why were the weapons set on burst? It seems like if you're invading a boat where you expect little to no resistance - certainly nobody armed - wouldn't you have your weapons set to single-shot?
Then again, this comes back to the whole "wouldn't you be using rubber bullets" thing, so once again I think it shows that they were just horrendously incompetent.

Because its close quarters. A single .556 round lacks enough impact to stop an attacker, whereas a burst will usually be enough to stop someone from using whatever weapon they have.
As a sidenote, the AK47 uses a 7.56 round, a single one of which IS enough to knock down someone who is hit by it.

A 5.56 round would stop most things cold, but that's irrelevant as 5.56 is not a pistol calibre but an AR one. I'd presume the pistols used would have been some sort of 9mm, no doubt the information is available somewhere if it's a major curiosity.

As a Jew who supports Israel, honestly the part that pissed me off the most about the whole thing was when I found out that Israel had known for *weeks* that this was going down, and all the thought they gave it was to rehearse a few boarding scenarios. They had to have known that this was a lose/lose situation, or something. Somehow they *always* go with a half-ass assessment of what is going to happen, from the fiasco with Hezbollah, to this. One way or another, everything they do turns out dead wrong - it's like watching a perpetual train wreck. We need Golda Meir and Moshe Dayan back. This current government collectively doesn't have half the intelligence or the balls of either.
Oh, regarding the 'international waters' business... yes, I'm sure that if they would have waited an hour the whole thing would have gone down *completely* different.

Doubtlessly, but when you shoot a guy who's standing in your bedroom with a gun you tend to get a lot more sympathy than if you shoot a guy who's cutting through your yard to get to the neighbor's house, even if he does give you the finger beforehand.

Why not? He doesn't say anything unbelievable. It's pretty much what you see on the IDF youtube videos.
Surprisingly I don't really trust what the IDF say:

Last week, the Israel Defence Force had to issue a retraction over an audio clip it had claimed was a conversation between Israeli naval officials and people on the Mavi Marmara, in which an activist told soldiers to "go back to Auschwitz". The clip was carried by Israeli and international press, but today the army released a "clarification/correction", explaining that it had edited the footage and that it was not clear who had made the comment.
The Israeli army also backed down last week from an earlier claim that soldiers were attacked by al-Qaida "mercenaries" aboard the Gaza flotilla. An article appearing on the IDF spokesperson's website with the headline: "Attackers of the IDF soldiers found to be al-Qaida mercenaries", was later changed to "Attackers of the IDF Soldiers found without identification papers," with the information about al-Qaida removed from the main article. An army spokesperson told the Guardian there was no evidence proving such a link to the terror organisation.

If they claim self defence it would help if they were not the attacker.

You have to run everything every side says through a filter for sure. The mercenary comment stemmed from that they found cash on the ship. The al queda thing was probably just a bad attempt at propaganda (there was also a news item from some Israeli ministry that Hamas doesn't let the aid from the ships into the Gaza strip, which I find fishy). What the soldier said, however, is supported by the videos of the event, so I find it believable.

The autopsy result stated that all (but one) bullets were by 9mm rounds. Also most info you can find on sidearms used by Israeli military list 9mm semi automatic pistols (several types, but none capable of full automatic or burst fire).

Is it still fishy if it's been reported on most major news websites?
As to multiple shots - yeah I always fire once then wait to see if I get shot at/attacked again before firing again. It would be inconceivable to fire multiple shots to make a definitive kill because when I feel my life is in danger that would be dumb. :tsktsk:
