It's a bit of a nonsense to call this a trial, because the result was never in doubt (and don't even let us get started on the irony of killing people for the crime of killing people).
A sham trial to go with that sham of a war we fought in Iraq.
And George W. Bush is every bit as much a war criminal as Saddam Hussein.

I don't think the result would have been in much doubt if he'd gotten a proper trial, but I'll get in line with the other hippie leftists here. I'm not a supporter of the death penalty, and even if it's Saddam, even if he'd tortured, mutilated and killed his victims himself instead of just handing someone a sheet of paper with his signature, he does qualify for the same human rights as anyone else, which includes the right to fair trial.

I don't have a problem with Saddam being found guilty, and I don't have a problem with him hanging - or with the death penalty in general, far as that goes. But I do have a problem with the Americans, and the West in general, pretending that this trial was anything but a sham, and with so many citizens seemingly quite happy to set aside the standards and principles they claim to be fighting to bring to Iraq simply because it suits their personal taste for revenge. If the Shia want to get some payback, and we're willing to play along with it, fine - but let's not pretend it's anything more than that.

Very much agreed. With all the Big Brains working away at the White House and beyond, you'd think that by now somebody* would have started musing out loud that perhaps executing Saddam is just one more step in the continuing pattern of Making Things Worse.
(*somebody besides Bob, i mean)

Sorry.
Anyway.....I also saw, (although I forgot to mention it at the time,) that quite a few of saddam's underlings got off with 15yr prison sentences, and another was aquitted because of lack of evidence.
FYI: even if saddam wins the appeal to this crime, (unlikely,) he then faces a court where he is charge with the deaths of over 200 000 people. (inevitable.)

Might as well be fair with everyone...now hang Bush and it's all settled.
Seriously...anyone not seeing the result of this "trial" a mile away...sheesh...

Alright, so we kidnap Saddam Hussein and OJ Simpson away in the dark of night. Haul them down to the office of one of those new face-swapping plastic surgeons and let Doc do his thing. X weeks of recovery time spent cramming Rosetta Stone forcibly into their heads for believability, one relocation shell game, and voilà. The cosmic balance is restored.
Evil Spoon on 5/11/2006 at 22:01
ehh, we should have just shot him in his hole and left him "missing" for a couple years then announce that he had been "found dead".

I can only say two words about this verdict: well, duh. I don't think there ever was any doubt about how this would end... In a Western country he could perhaps get life sentence instead, but in Iraq it was pretty much clear.
