I've just seen on TV that saddam has been given death as his sentence for the murder of 148 people. The judge sentence death by hanging, and hussein said that as he was a 'millitary man,' he should be shot by firing squad. He appointed himself 'field marshal' in his glory days. He will appeal, but the first steps have been taken.

I'm curious, he was convicted by a court in a "mostly Shia town" - given his past dealings with the Shias', wouldn't that be akin to trying a black man in 30's deep south?

Perhaps, but it's certainly what he deserves.
The fact that he was given any due process when he denied so many others the opportunity is a luxury in and of itself.

I'm in no way a supporter or sympathiser of the former dictator. I'm just questioning that civilised virtue of a "fair trial", and not with too critical a tone either, I might add.

Since we're all about "democratizing" the East, we should probably be opposed to this kind of thing.

whatever you think he might "deserve" based on any facts we might think we have, there is no denying that this was a totally biased procedure and can in no way be seen as a fair trial.

I thought this was just running on and on forever, with Saddam messing the court around and not a lot happening. So I'm kinda shocked to see a verdict has suddenly been reached.
I wonder if a truly fair trial could ever have happened. Maybe if we'd picked a jury from some remote village in Mongolia or something.

Yes, was just having that discussion. It would be very difficult, and even were it fair I imagine he'd be found guilty - after all, he is not a hugely wonderful person.
But I still don't support the death penalty under any circumstance, unfortunately.
