Hi all,
I'm here to advocate an unofficial No-CD patch.
Replace your EXE with this file -
(
http://personal.atl.bellsouth.net/lig/j/_/j_daniel/Morrowind/Morrowind.exe)
It removes the SafeDisc copy protection wrapper from the EXE file, which causes major performance slow-downs. It still requires the CD in the drive, so
it's not piracy. EVERYONE who's used this has seen performance increases on the order of 5-20 fps and decreased load times. It is amazing, and I guarantee virus-free.
Edit: OOPS! Just saw the other thread on this same subject. But I'll leave this one up to make sure everyone knows it has my Official Stamp of Approval(tm) :)

Hey kathode, sounds goood if I should ever get this game and a computer to play it. ;) I suggest tagging this as an "important" thread so it sticks to the top though.

Thanks for the link kathode! And to anyone else who might be wondering about DLing this file, go ahead; I actually did notice a very nice decrease in load times and an overall better performance.

Yup, seems to be a great little fix.
But backup the old EXE first, in case. I know of a few people who actually have worse performance when using it (most others find it a lot better though).

Thanks for the link. It worked miracles for my game woes..

kathode...
any idea if we use the new executable and have to revert back to the original exe will saved games get screwed up or even worse not load at all?
i'll test this when I get home but was curious if you or anyone else has tested this...
thanks for the tips and great site.

I haven't tested this yet myself, but there are users reporting an improvement in fps from changing the way lighting is handled. Evidently, quadratic lighting has better performance then linear. Here's the pertinent modified snippet from the .ini file.
UseLinear=0
LinearMethod=1
LinearValue=3.0
LinearRadiusMult=1.0
;
UseQuadratic=1
QuadraticMethod=2
QuadraticValue=16.0
QuadraticRadiusMult=4.0
;
I'll try it out and report back my findings later tonight.

I got slight improvements from both techniques. Of course, the save game I used for testing wasn't in a town so I may experience better gains once I make my way back out of the country.

Is there a noticable visual difference with Quadratic?

smallish boost.the pixel shaders take up alot of fill rate,as do the reflections.
