Chicken is a bit easier these days though because it's easy to find 'hormone free' and 'free range' chicken in the freezer case at any major food store. There's no such information available on the packaging for beef, pork, and lamb however.
fett, "free range" does not necessarily mean chickens roaming free over the countryside. There is some regulation about what "free range" means, but if you look it up you will be surprised just how non-free range "free range" really is.

Humans are omnivores. I don't think any further evolution is needed.
As my final rant:
Do you know which animals are not protected by the animal cruelty act?
i'll let you do the research, but to save you some time you can find them at your local supermarket.
Why is it okay, for example, to torture a pig, a cow, or a chicken (both emotionally - as much as an animal feels something akin to "emotion" - and physically), yet it is considered improper (legally) for a person to torture their pet dog? What is the intrinsic difference (a la Michael Vic, for example)?
(p.s. here's a hint - it would cost our taste buds too much to prevent the former... correction, it would cost the meat industry too much, and they fight tooth and nail in Washington to make sure it stays status quo)
Happy eating.

The difference is: we don't eat dogs.

Vegetarian FTW. Meat problems (plus a ton of other stuff) fixed.
Don't kid yourself. Skipping animal protein causes a shitload of problems on its own.

A vegetarian Texan? Get outta here. Surely the whole point of living in Texas is to eat damn fine steak.

You better believe it... i was a huge meat lover for years and years. My family has a tradition of slow cookin' backyard grillin' and chillin' plus beer and the whole schebang (my dad still doesn't understand why i jumped ship), and i had to give up a whole houseload of personal barbeque recipes and traditions along with my barrel smoker (i used charcoal and pecan logs, not the fake gas stuff).
i downsized to a weber grill for the occasional hypocrisy of grilled fish or grilling veggies.
RBJ, just out of curiosity, what problems are you referring to?

How do I get beef that's not been abused, injected, color-dyed, medicated, or otherwise fucked around with? I'm in a fairly urban area - can't really run down to the local rancher and offer to buy a cow. Is it time to give up beef altogether? I'm about <> that close.
You could try (

Oh nothing major, just a general trend towards deficiencies in essential amino acids, calcium, vitamin B12, riboflavin and iron, among other things.
As well as the elevated estrogen levels that come from consuming too much soy.
I've known plenty of vegetarians. They all look like weaklings, and the best any of them tend toward as body shapes go is "skinny-fat."
But, carry on deluding yourself that it's healthier to avoid meat altogether, which I'm sure you will. Zealots don't tend to listen to reason anyway.

If you'll pardon the pun, what's the beef with high-fructose corn syrup? Is this a US-only thing, cos I never think I've heard about it?

I hardly drink soda's anymore, I drink sweetened green tea, I add my own sugar.
I'd take the risk on corn syrup rather than expose myself to the high concentrations of fluoride in green tea. But each to their own.

Never caused me any problems, I must say. Elephants and rhinos seem to do okay too.
