Thats the problem with mass production of any food.Almost nobody knows how the food was treated before they take it off of the grocery store shelf.
Even if most people knew it would not change anything because most people don't want to be bothered growing their own live stock and slaughtering it.

Did you just say that eating mass-produced meat makes children hyper?
In all honesty, if there was ONE foodstuff I would rip by force from the clammy, sausage fingers of the American Public it'd be this hideous High-Fructose Corn Syrup shit. Meat is the least of anyone's worries around here.
People get bent about the overt, not the important, apparently.

With what we know nowadays. Is anyone trying to make a conscious effort, on a personal level to stay away from high fructose corn syrup? Sometimes, it can't be avoided. For me, I do pay closer attention to labels, and check what the first few ingredients are, 9/10 times its high fructose corn syrup.
I hardly drink soda's anymore, I drink sweetened green tea, I add my own sugar.

I don't eat a lot of beef. Hell, I don't eat a lot of meat, period, though I am an absolute fag for fried chicken if it isn't cooked half-assed. And the local Wendy's knows that I always get a spicy chicken sandwich, and nothing else.
That said, I do think that the least you can do is make sure your meat is cruelty-free. Sure, it's not as tasty, but you won't feel so guilty in this day and age of people saying chicken goddamn nuggets make children hyper.

I can't stand any fast food--it all tastes like masking-tape!
Especially Wendy's. They used to be decent...about thirty years ago.
Not sure about elsewhere, but here in Michigan I buy Laura's Lean brand (no growth hormones or anti-biotics, and supposedly free-range) from Kroger for about $4.59 a pound. Not that I eat a lot of beef, but for me the LL brand actually tastes better than the meat we used to buy (like tomatoes that one grows themselves...not those hard, red things that they pass off as food).

I'm *really* trying to understand Gille's posts but Jesus H. I can't comprehend a fucking thing he says. Learn to write sentences mate. ;)
We have an allergy issue with my 2 year old - he can't have any processed foods because of the gluten, and there is NOTHING in our house with high fructose corn syrup on the label. Meat and vegetables (and some fruit) are pretty much his entire diet, and within that realm, he needs as much variety as possible, hence, the necessity for beef.
Chicken is a bit easier these days though because it's easy to find 'hormone free' and 'free range' chicken in the freezer case at any major food store. There's no such information available on the packaging for beef, pork, and lamb however.

I check bread, because putting that shit in bread is so stupid I refuse to support it. I mean seriously, I just want a sandwich, high fructose corn syrup should not be entering the equation in any form.
Also y'all need a place like this around: (
http://animalscience.ucdavis.edu/facilities/meat.htm) Worst thing that probably ever happens to those cows is having a class full of vet students practice aritificial insemination on them.

Hemmingway sucked beef.
Starfall - yeah the corn syrup is everywhere. It's ridiculous trying to pack a lunch for my 1st grader. Everything from granola bars to 'fruit' juice has it. We've ended up with Nature's Own wheat bread, Juicy Juice (and I suspect loads of sugar b/c it's from concentrate), baked chips, and usually vegetables and ranch dip. How asinine is it that you can't buy canned fruit (In Its Own Juice!) that doesn't have corn syrup added? FRUIT IS NATURALLY SWEET YOU FUCKING RETARDS. Even most 'wheat bread' is enriched and colored to look more 'grainy' but still has some type of processed sugar mixed in. I've even found out that some of the starches used in cheese packaging are made from sugar syrup and glucose. WAHT THE FUK.
