The hamburger/chicken/roast beef sandwich isn't what's bad for the body, it's the side of
potato chips or fries that is served with it. Fried meat isn't bad either, it's the breading (flour/corn meal) that makes them bad. Also, fried meats are often served with biscuits, corn muffins, gravy, or pasta. Add to that the sodas with their high-fructose
corn syrup and you're on a fast path to obesity.
.
It cracks me up when I order a low-carb wrap - nice meat and veggie stuff, and then it comes with a side of chips and a sweet pickle.
McDonald's tries to pull stuff like this with their 'happy meals' for kids too. The McNuggets are already shit, but they try to make you feel better by giving the option of 'apple dippers' instead of fries. Apples sprayed with some ungodly starch to keep them from turning brown, and caramel dip that's 90% high fructose corn syrup. I've actually heard people say, "We eat at McDonald's, but we've stopped eating the fries - we get different sides now."

There is a section of the vegitarian population that is chronically undernourished because of this. You, and SD with his big sexy thighs, may not belong to this group but when it's large enough that doctors recognise it in otherwise fit people you've got to think that it's an issue.
Absolutely this is true. However, as i mentioned, that has more to do with shitty diets than vegetarianism. Who is to say the folks weren't subsisting off double cheeseburgers before becoming vegetarian? A potato chip/french fry/fruit rollup diet is not healthy in the slightest.

What you've opted to forget, the_grip, is how you initially started off suggesting that vegitarian diets are superior.
i'm still failing to see where i claimed they were superior... i did say that you avoid the problems mentioned in the OP in a veggie diet by default, and i did say there is plenty of research to favor vegetarian diets. i'm just not seeing where i said they were superior unless you consider avoiding the problems in the OP as defining a superior diet.
Do i personally think they are superior? Of course - otherwise i wouldn't be vegetarian. That does not mean that there are not healthy meat-based diets. In fact, my choice to become vegetarian has everything to do with ethics, the environment, and all that kind of shit and nothing to do with health reasons that are part of a veggie diet (although that is definitely a bonus). Meat tastes good. i like meat (when do you hear veggies say that?). If i could find animals that were humanely treated and a situation that was both eco-friendly and helpful to a bunch of other ethical issues, then i would be glad to eat meat. In other words, if i lived on a farm and raised my own livestock, i would have no qualms with eating the meat produced.
However, as i hinted above, i don't go around brow-beating people into becoming vegetarians. i just offer the answers i've found when asked (which is something i also stated above).

Exactly. Substituting carbs for carbs doesn't help the situation one bit.

If you want to talk strawman argument, how about this: i never even once indicated that there is no such thing as healthy animal based proteins.
Then great, we're in agreement. More options equals better opportunity to correct your diet, and you can shut the fuck up now.

But apples are healthy see? It's like the trail mix you can buy that is covered in carb-based starches and loaded with sodium. They've taken every single fucking thing that was good about the fruit and extracted it, then added shit that will kill you. Why? WHY?
Again - the thing that pisses me off the most is canned fruit. It's in it's own juice, vacuum sealed. It should have a decent shelf life without many preservatives, etc. Even WITH the preservatives, why does it need to be additionally sweetened with fructose, glucose, and corn syrup? Same thing with most jellies, juices, etc. We've been drinking Juicy Juice, which is from concentrate, and Ocean Spray light - both have low carbs (naturally) and no artificial sweeteners and they are 100x more flavorful than Welch's or Tropicana that adds a bunch of shit to their juice. I can't understand why companies that use natural ingredients are blowing the competition away. Is it laziness? Do people ENJOY flirting with diabetes? If more people ate/drank natural food, the price would come down, but as it is, I feel like I'm getting raped at the cash register for buying fruits and vegetables instead of fruit roll-ups and oven-poppers.
Edit: Gille if you're still reading, just be glad it wasn't RBJ who addressed the grammar issue. :)

Vegitarian diets can be just as healthy as non-veggie but achieving a good balance is harder. This is a fact.

Might it be less that vegetarian diets are not necessarily inherently more diffiicult to balance right, but merely that because we are in a minority, we aren't catered for as well as non-veggies?
Anyway, I don't want to evangelise a vegetarian diet as something necessarily superior. All I can do is to speak from experience as someone born to vegetarian parents who has entered their 30th year as a vegetarian and not really suffered any particular detriment because of it.
B12 is the only thing I would say that you really have to be careful to get enough of, and given that I eat nachos until they're coming out of my ears, and that just about everything is fortified with vitamins these days, it's not a big job to hit your RDA.
