This was discussed briefly in another thread (dealing with eggs/chicken issues) but stuff like this frustrates the hell out of me. For years we bought 1/4 or half a cow from my father in law who raised beef, and we knew we weren't going to die from it. We don't eat tons of beef anyway - more of a chicken, pasta, fish thing going on at our house. But my 1st grader eats lunch at school sometimes, and it looks like some of this beef is used in the school lunch programs. :nono: I can't win.
Since the father in law stopped raising beef, we've been buying from a restaurant distributor that sells to Outback and Applebee's, and from a local butcher. Problem is, they can't really tell you after the meat. The butcher says 'it's cornfed and raised in Iowa and Missouri' - but I have no way of getting further information without getting REALLY pushy. Same thing with the distributor.
How do I get beef that's not been abused, injected, color-dyed, medicated, or otherwise fucked around with? I'm in a fairly urban area - can't really run down to the local rancher and offer to buy a cow. Is it time to give up beef altogether? I'm about <> that close.

I guess to really know beef, you have to shake hands with it first
Nuno would know what to do!

Nuno did your mom. This is a different issue entirely.

A couple of times a year when I want a REALLY good steak I go with Allen Brothers. Yeah you'll get some sticker shock but it's the best you can get.

I dont really think its a different issue, how long you been eating beef?

Same thing can be said for chickens. Mass raised, shoved in small pens, here lets pump you full of hormones so you can grow up quick guys, so we can kill you.
Its a sad state of affairs, things are slowly changing. You may have to try your whole food type places for that farm raised taste, and pay through the nose for it as well.
Its really disturbing what they do to those animals, it upsets me. :(

what kill them? just dont eat meat, or possibly any product that has eggs or chicken products in them. Good luck with that.

Organic food here in the UK is starting to get more accepted. To label anything organic it has to be from a licensed premises and not injected, fed or interfered with in any way. Has to be the way to go.
