Scanned the printed instructions and the in game options for this, as it really is the obvious thing to check first isn't it, but I can't see it.
Yeah, it's not documented anywhere that I've been able to find and you can actually bind it to some other function like it's not reserved in any way, but you're left wondering why your hud disappears whenever you try and change weapon modes or something (indeed , it takes a while to work out what it is you're pressing that does it, if anything.) I can't remember what it is off hand though, sorry.

Ah, right. Thanks Muz, I'll do some tests as to which key knocks the HUD out and report back.

Fixed!
HUD hide is the - key; HUD show is + Being lefthanded, I'd bound these to some movement keys. Problem solved, and special thanks to Muzman. Cheers.

I've run into this problem myself. I use my +/- keys on my keypad for reload/flashlight in other games, but stalker won't let me reassign them. How do you remove the HUD hide binds so I can bind the keys to what I want?
Edit: I found a fix, though not as elegant as I hoped. I used AutoHotkey to remap my keyboard so I don't have any conflicting binds now. Why did GSC hard-code certain keybinds? It makes things much more difficult than they should be
