Hemebond, I'm not ragging. Doom 3 was a great engine when it came out.

The Doom 3 engine is
not ideal for a System Shock based game regardless of anything. Aside from having a very small mod community, it was never easy to mod with.
You're absolutely right. Your argument is completely unbiased, well-informed and backed up with so many facts, I don't know how I could have misinterpreted. Nevermind the availability of an (
http://qeradiant.com/) open source map editor that supports many different id games. Or the fact you can (
http://www.iddevnet.com/doom3/downloads.php) download the game code. I guess all these (
http://www.iddevnet.com/doom3/downloads.php) plugins for different 3D editors just make the game even
more difficult to mod. As you say, the community is also pitifully small. Such a (
http://doom3.filefront.com/files/;4071) rediculous amount of Doom 3 mods; I could play through them all in a day! And you can forget finding (
http://www.doom3world.org/) a helpful community with a keen interest in Doom 3.
I know full well what the Unreal Engine 3 is capable of. I have seen the videos and read that technology page.
I would love to see you quote where I said the Doom 3 engine was better than a next-gen engine that hasn't been released yet. Speaking of which, I believe the original poster referred to a mod. A modification of an existing game. What UE3 game do you think would be a better choice?

Just the one "S" please.

Okay, edited.

I'd balance the weapon skill sets against each other better. I'd also redo the layout to a more realistic design for each ship (and maybe the BotM).
Also, a competitive multiplayer mode might be nice (although you can fight in the current multiplayer mode, if you so desire).

Thanks. I knew there must be some other graphics improving mods out by now, and that readdition of the original midwife skins is just what I was looking for too. :thumb:

The one thing I'd do would be making the replicators way cheaper and making it easier to regenerate your psypower, so the 3 classes are more balanced.
Different engine doesn't make sense since you would have to start from scratch. That's not modding thats rebuilding to me.

It could be possible to somehow export the SS2 levels' geometry. It would also need to convert textures and models to be supported by a chosen engine so it takes time and effort, but it is doable. (as far as I know...)
What I would improve is getting rid of exploits like free maintenance, infinite duration of implants, free research speedup, etc.
Most, if not all of you people know how to use these I assume. :p

When you got regenerating psi powers you don't need cheaper replicators anymore because psi hypos are the only thing you really need to buy sometimes.
It has been said that regen psi might lead to games where people just spend a lot of time in safe places. But then it's their game, so let'em play.
Same goes for those exploits. I don't even know how most of them work... regression is your friend! :D
From all that I've picked up, scripting and interface are bigger problems then level geometry and textures while trying to rebuild SS2 in another engine.

Of course it would. It would lead to what some developers call "sandwich gameplay"-- just leave the game running and go get a sandwich (or whatever). Come back, and your psi bar is full again! This isn't like Master Chief's regenerating shield; since psi can be used to replicate items, regenerating psi would essentially introduce infinite money into the game.

ZB, I know you are a fan of Anachronox. Did you ever get PAL's best weapon? Not so much "sandwich" gameplay as "holiday in the tropics" while waiting for the little noob to roll his ass around in there.
