Well, the Von Braun was originally supposed to be a cruise vessel or something like that and the reason it was chosen for the FTL drive is because of the fact that it was the only ship large enough to hold the drive that wasnt in use.
Ummm... where in the game does it say any of that?
Bluegrime on 14/6/2006 at 07:51
Shit on a shingle, my mistake. Must've read it in fanfiction or something.. But anyway, Tri Optimum would certainly want to milk the FTL thing for all its worth. Aside from the obvious money to be made selling the engines to the UNN (Or other firms, groups, corporations..), im sure they wouldnt want to pass up a chance to make money off a ship thats already built. Just like people with more money then sense will pay to go into space now, people would certainly pay a pretty penny to go into completly uncharted space.

Sarcasm? Yes/No?
No, I said what I think. As long as there are no kids there it's a good in-game explanation.
If there were children onboard that would be a good reason too. And I tried to give a few in-game reasons why there would have to be children too. Like the problem of finding a few thousand top scientist that are all single or don't care if next time they see their children they might be older than themselves.
Bluegrime, if you were the only man of medieval times to own a Ford Mustang, would you sell it? I'm sure Triop could have found better ways to milk this cow.
Bluegrime on 14/6/2006 at 09:12
I might not sell it, but i'd certainly squeeze peoples coin purses until they bled to ride in it.
Kolya on 14/6/2006 at 09:32
Unfortunately the UNN is the government and didn't pay for the ride.
*imagines the Von Braun equipped with a taxi meter and a bumber sticker "Kids onboard"*

I would make close combat a separate skill. The "waving with monkey wrench/laser rapier/crystal shard" is simply ludicirious. I'm not buying that a marine with three years of service is only a marginally better basher than a zombie (hybrid.) Not even the basic thrust from fencing is available. I would also replace the overhead swing-upgrade with something more useful. Beacuse the overhead swing is actually a beginners mistake. Sure, it's efficient in its simple brutality. But an attack that goes upwards is much harder to defend against.
I would make it possible to chop of separate limbs and the heads of the enemies. And speaking of the thrust, impaling more than one opponent at a time with the laser rapie would be possible too. Why not add power to your attack by taking a jupming step (basic fencing maneuver) or charge! into combat?
Throwing would also be a separate skill. Putting a throwing knife into the head of an enemy XIII-style would sure be nice.
It's been said before, but not in this wording: If Mikhail Kalashnikov could make one of the sturdiest and most reliable AK:s in the 40's, how come that the people of the 22:nd century are making weapons out of styrofoam and jell-o? Steel shortage?
EDIT: I would also add kids. As corpses and ghosts. Hybrid kids aren't too plausible. You got to survive the transformation process, right? And even if they did, they must be good foot soldiers. I guess that The Many would let children serve the greater good by having them for dinner.
But then, the signs might be there for some stupid regulations sake.
Bluegrime on 30/6/2006 at 00:15
The laser rapier takes energy 3/agility 4, shard takes exotic 6. And, since the CMs seem to impart knowladge enough to instantly know how to do something, its assumable that training is invalidated by the R-Grade/upgrade system.

Actualy, I don't think the developers thought of this problem at all.
I got the impression that there is no difference in time for the crew of the VB and the people outside.
Just like the promo vid tells us: "Imagine: traveling to distant star systems in a period of weeks!". That sounds more like actual traveling (going on vacation to Tau Ceti V), doesn't it? And you wouldn't expect your family at home to be already in it's 10th generation when you return from a vacation ..
Maybe our physical rules and theories from today are outdated and proven wrong in the time of SS2?

Zombies are noted for being able to keep up with men stronger then themselves. This isn't because they
are stronger, but rather because they are better able to harness the strength they have. What they lack in elegance they make up for with force.
Many of the moves used in fencing are redundant in SS2, simply because enemies don't block. An upwards stab is certainly more fitting for a bladed weapon against an organic target, though, as you're a lot more likely to hit something important that way. Likewise, a thrust is probably a lot more effective against a robotic enemy then a standard swing, so long as your weapon can penetrate the armor.
