Hey, I'm new here so stop me if this has been done before...
First off, we all know how great System Shock 2 is, being pretty much the epitome of a survival/horror/FPS/RPG game. However, I was wondering... if you hypothetically had unlimited time and unrestricted resources at your disposal to mod it in whatever way you could, what - if anything - would you change and how would you change it?
In my case the biggest thing to change would obviously be the graphics. I would probably use the Doom 3 engine since (from a layman's perspective as I have never actually done any modding) it would seem to be the best fit with its enclosed spaces, disgusting growths, and moody lighting. It would probably still have to be modified quite a bit, however, as the Von Braun - with its sleek, high-tech look obviously looks quite a bit different from Doom's industrial set-up (though it might work in the case of the Rickenbacker).
The next thing would probably be the Rickenbacker levels at the end which famously for whatever reason weren't completed on quite the same level as the others. I would change the set up just enough so that they would make slightly more sense then they currently do.
Lastly (and probably most controversially) I would rerecord some of the voice logs. Though 90% of them are excellent, there are a couple which sound as if the voice actor is just reading his/her lines ("Oh, no. I am about to die. What will I do?" - totally bland!)
Anyway, that's my idea of a dream mod. Other than those few changes I would leave it as it is.:thumb:

That's great but a switch to the doom3 engine implies the kind of code infrastructure additions you couldn't imagine. It's possible, but welcome to the next three years of your life.

To tell the truth I would leave SS2 as it is and make a new game. Why try copying something that's great? It would probably come out like an American remake of a French thriller.

Also what zone control said, also the copyright issue hasn't even been brought up yet. Also this is a pretty common thread template.

Would you mind telling us exactly which logs you're referring to? I don't think any of them are bad at all; in fact, I think the voice acting quality is excellent.

Hellooo?? Rebirth? SHTUP?

I think he means change the graphics to the Doom3 level, and using whatever facny lighting and shadow effects it has, among other things.

I think that kind of graphics update would definately give SS2 a more updated scare factor, even for us who played the game 10+ times. :cheeky:
But isn't JupiterEx (FEAR uses that engine) a possible engine as well? With my new system I came to the conclusion it looks amazing, if not better than Doom 3/Quake 4. But EA will still keep the doors closed...

In that case someone needs to beat him with the cluebat, since that would mean recreating the entire game from scratch.

I would rebuild the Rickenbacker.
