Doing that + removing safedisc + renaming the executable seems to have fixed it.
I'm not quite sure why, but when the testme.exe executable created by the safedisc unwrapper is renamed to shock2.exe the black screen comes back. Something must be trying to force a compatibility mode that doesnt work when it sees the shock2 executable filename.
Thank you for your help.
If you are using compability mode with either testme.exe or the correct rename, I
strongly recommend turning it off. Also remember that you need to reapply the affinity fix to the new executable.

Hey, finally after about 3 hours and messing about with I have gotten SS2 working, the only problem I have now is my sensitivity. The up and down axis is much more sensitive than left and right.. feels like left to right is about 5 sens and up and down is like 10 sens. I have checked my SS2 folder and can't find anything to do with tweaking mouse sensitivity. Anyone able to help? :P

My computer:
* Windows XP Home SP 2
* AMD 3400+ Socket 754 (Single Core)
* 1GB RAM
* Nvidia 6600gt 128MB AGP
* System Shock 2 V 2.3
I've read nearly everything on this topic on this forum and other websites and cannot get this game to work. Here's what I've tried:
* Used a safedisc unwrapper and ran the test exe, both with and without compaitiblity changes
* Used and ran the 2000/XP fix, both with and without compatibility changes
* No changes to exe other than No-CD crack, with and without compatibility changes
* Made two separate installs, one with the x:/setup -lghtforce (or whatever it is), and one with normally installing it. Ran the regular (uncracked) exe both with and without compatibility changes, mounted on Alcohol 52% with SafeDisc emulation enabled.
I need some help because I really want to play this game. When I start an unpatched .exe, the game's splash screen comes up, goes to a black screen, then I get an error report. When I try with a patched or cracked .exe, it goes straight to the black screen then I get an error report. This problem occurs even after using several different no-CD patches, the win2000/xp fix, or a .icd unwrapper, with all different compatibility modes. Before anyone recommends it, YES, I have read the FAQ and 4 pages of replies.
Somebody Please Help!!!

Maybe this is a problem with the cutscenes.
Try rename the 'cutscenes' folder, like removing the S at the end. And see if something changes.

Renamed the folder, splash screen displayed then went to black screen and back to error report again, thanks for the tip anyway though. I previously installed the video drivers that come on the disk for use with the cinematics so I doubt that's the problem.

Okay, so I deleted all the program files to System Shock 2 figuring I'd reinstall it and start anew. Bad move. Now I can't install the game from the cd, and when I try to uninstall it, I get an error saying "unable to locate x:\system shock\SShocku.log." I looked for data in the windows registry with regedit and theres none there to delete. I tried making the folder and log file but it said the log file was corrupted and couldn't be uninstalled. Any help would be very welcome, I've been trying to get this game to work since 4:00pm. Perhaps if someone copieda nd pasted the contents of their log file I could create one that would seem correct and allow the program to be uninstalled (even though there are no files for it on my comp anymore).

You don't need a log, just delete the game yourself. And search for any registry entries left with the 'Find' function.
You can install the game manually by simply copying the game files over to the hard drive, then all you need is an install.cfg from someone and it should run.
Your problem is pretty odd though. Did you try adding safe_texture_manager to cam.cfg? It won't probably help when the game crashes before even entering the menu, but you never know.

OK, back where I started now. I have SS2 installed, I've tried it with the 2000/xp fix, with an unwrapped .exe, and the regular .exe, all with win2000 compatibility with 256 colors, no windows styles, and 640x480 res. Still crashes at start without ever going to menu.
I would give up on this but I've heard some amazing things about this game.

Don't run the game with any compability settings enabled, they do the opposite of fixing problems in the case of SS2.
