I call it system command because it is a command you can use with the OS, I don't know nearly as much as you about the background of the phrase 'system command', to me it is just a command performed in the system; ie, the OS.
But (

Okay, it's taken me hours, but I've finally looked through all goddamn 35 pages of this FAQ, and I still haven't found an answer. So here goes.
I'm running Windows XP SP2. Dell Dimension 8300 (P4 2.6 ghz, 512 mb RAM, Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb, Soundblaster Live).
I've gotten SS2 up and running, and it runs like a charm, except with one critical problem. The sound. When I view any terminal or keypad, my sound partially cuts out. When I say partially, it happens in a very strange, specific way. I still hear the ambient noise of the ship (hissing of pipes, etc), but my weapon sounds, enemy sounds and footsteps are gone. Once I exit the game and re-load my saved game, the sound is fixed, but as soon as I touch another terminal or keypad or loot someone's corpse, my sound dies again.
I've tried updating to the latest SB Live driver, that didn't help. I've also tried every in-game setting I could - including hardware acceleration on/off, channels, positional sound bias, etc.
I'm fresh out of ideas. :(
EDIT: I discovered a way to fix the problem. I downloaded an old archived driver for my soundcard, set the channels to maximum, and now it works.
EDIT again!: Now I'm having another problem, I can't run SS2. It says I have X disc space free, and I need at least 35 MB free. But the number keeps changing each time I run it! Sometimes it says 4, sometimes it says 9! And I have 96 gigabytes free on the hard drive SS2 is trying to run on.

You could try lowering hardware accel. from the dxdiag. But otherwise I'm not sure what might be going on.
By the way, does your motherboard have an onboard audio chip?

There is solution for that problem in this thread, just look my post at here:(

I've got a problem.
I can run System Shock 2, but once I actually am able to move my character, the game freezes, and I cannot alt+tab my way out, I have to shut my PC off.
I've tried patches, editing CFG's, and trying different compatibility modes, and nothing works.

Did you try the bright red FAQ at the top of this forum? Specifically the section titled Game freezes / Running SS2 on a Dual-Processor/Dual Core System or Got a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading?

When i try to play System Shock 2 on Windows XP Professional, it comes up with a box that says:
"System Shock 2 has known compatibility issues with this version of Windows"
I can't continue from there, so it won't let me play! :(
I've got Windows 98 too, and I tried it on that, but once i get to "start game" it loads almost the whole way, but then the screen goes blank, and the noise is still being made. If you leave it too long though, it just freezes completely...
I tried using -lgntforce for both OS's, but it didn't help.
Does anyone know how these can be fixed?
Thanks!

I get that error message too, regarding the compability issues, but as soon as I click Ok the game runs without problems.
Orb on 26/11/2006 at 18:59
Well, when i click ok, it just gets rid of the box, but doesn't load the game...

Are you using compability mode?
