Hi!
I just stumbled upon this game, and I decided to give it a try. As it was released before the XP era, I did some background checking on compatibility, and found this forum, with all the tips, solutions etc.
After that, I got all those necessary updates and such, and got a totally different problem.
I mounted the image with daemontools, and after I ran setup.exe, absolutely nothing happens, and if I click Install in the autorun, it just hangs. No Installshield stuff, no CPU usage, no memory usage - the process just ends. I tried compatibility mode, no success. I even tried on a somewhat different PC, still no luck.
Tried running with System privileges, no effect. Tried some copy protection emulation, no effect.
Specs:
P4 Mobile 3GHz HT
Radeon Mobility 9700
XP Pro (fully windowsupdated)
Athlon 1800
Radeon 8500
XP Pro (fully windowsupdated)
Anyone got an idea? (man I hate compatibility issues):nono:

Just install it manually, but the game won't find your CD in the drive so you'll need to create install.cfg yourself, or find a no CD patch. I could send you the contents of a default install.cfg in a private message if you want.

@Bjossi
Can you send me the content too, please???

I copied the \shock directory without any installer and wizardry stuff... Started just fine, now I have to deal with those HT, Ati etc. issues discussed here... :rolleyes:
I guess I also need to have some registry entries for the patch to detect my installation correctly. Could you send those entries created by the setup? (copied text from the .reg files should be enough... I guess)
Thanks a lot anyway.

Here it is.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Looking Glass Studios]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Looking Glass Studios\System Shock(tm) 2]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Looking Glass Studios\System Shock(tm) 2\1.0]
"NeverAgain"=dword:00000000
If it is illegal to post the registry key, then just ask me to remove it from my post.

Thanks for the keys, but the patcher still says "Cannot determine installation directory"... How should it know then?
Please send the cfg you mentioned, maybe that's what I'm missing.
Other than the patch, I didn't have any problems for about ten minutes of play, except the crash when trying to save. It was mentioned on page 3 by Alezunde, but I couldn't find any solution posted.

You need to have a folder called 'current'.
I'll send you a private message with an install.cfg then.

The correct registry key for the patcher is this:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\shock2.exe]
"Path"="c:\\shock2"
@="c:\\shock2\\SHOCK2.EXE"
Open Notepad and copy above text to it. Then change "c:\\shock2" in both lines to point to that directory where you installed your game. Note double backslash and that it requires full directory name. If there is single backslash in that name, add another. After that go to File->Save and put this line in Filename-box : "shock2patch.reg". Note to include quotation marks, too. Remember to change Save as type to all files. Then hit Save-button and locate your saved text file. Doubleclick it and if it's correctly saved with .reg-file extension, you should have now window with Yes and No-buttons. By clicking Yes-button context of shock2patch.reg-file will be added to registry.
Now patcher program should work.

Pardon me if this hasn't been mentioned before, I honestly don't have the patience to wade through 32 pages, some of which may be less then worth the effort to read...
I'm running XP with SS2 patched up and SHTUP texture upgrade and the complementary model upgrade. I could get the game to load, get into the menu, see the videos, and even get the game to load.
However at some point during running of the first level (And usually rather quickly) the game would suddenly crash with nothing but looping sound effects to suggest what was wrong.
I've just gone into DXDiag, gone to the sound tab up top and set the acceleration slider down one notch. I've gone back into the game and so far the random crashes have stopped, I'll keep playing now in case its a fluke that I got through the basic training area without a crash and update you if I'm in fact mistaken... Thought I should share it sooner rather than later though.
EDIT: THen again, I might be mistaken. I've tried notching it all the way down, but to no avail. On the plus side I've at least eliminated sound acceleration from the cause.
Additional: By chance I looked at the affinity section of the processes element of the task manager. Despite only have a single old processor that isn't even dual core, XP seems to think I have 2 cpus. I'm now running the game with the SHOCK2.icd process running on cpu 0 only and it hasn't crashed so far.
Before doing the item mentioned in 'Additional' please read my next post, theres a risk it could do a lot of harm to the computer.
